What does a senior plant controller do?

A Senior Plant Controller is responsible for overseeing the financial operations of a manufacturing plant. This role includes budgeting, forecasting, cost analysis, and financial reporting to ensure the plant remains profitable and efficient. Senior Plant Controllers work closely with plant management to support strategic decision-making and compliance with financial regulations. They analyze production costs, identify areas for improvement, and help implement cost-control measures. Their expertise helps drive financial performance and operational excellence within the plant.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a senior plant controller, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Senior Plant Controller, you need strong expertise in financial analysis, cost accounting, and budgeting, typically supported by a bachelor’s degree in accounting or finance and several years of relevant experience. Proficiency in ERP systems like SAP or Oracle, advanced Excel skills, and sometimes CPA or CMA certification are important technical qualifications. Exceptional analytical thinking, leadership, and communication skills help you influence decision-making and collaborate cross-functionally. These competencies are vital for ensuring accurate financial reporting, optimizing plant performance, and supporting strategic business decisions.

What are some common challenges faced by senior plant controllers in managing financial operations at a manufacturing facility?

They must collaborate closely with operations, supply chain, and executive teams to analyze variances, forecast budgets, and implement process improvements. Successfully navigating these challenges requires strong analytical skills, effective communication, and the ability to drive cross-functional initiatives that align with both financial and operational goals.

In this role, you will serve as a strategic finance partner to plant leadership, providing insight that supports operational performance, cost control, and sound business decisions. The position is well suited for someone who is comfortable balancing hands-on financial oversight with active involvement in day-to-day plant activity. You will also help strengthen financial discipline across the operation while collaborating with cross-functional teams to meet business objectives.

Responsibilities:

• Lead the plant’s financial activities, ensuring accurate oversight of operational results and reinforcing accountability across the local leadership team.

• Produce and review daily, weekly, and monthly financial reports for plant, senior, and executive leadership audiences.

• Maintain key performance dashboards and contribute financial insight during management review meetings and operational discussions.

• Provide support across core transactional areas such as accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, and purchasing processes.

• Supervise, mentor, and develop finance or administrative team members to build capability and support strong performance.

• Partner with materials and operations teams to monitor inventory accuracy, support cycle counts, and assist with physical inventory activities.

• Assess the financial impact of engineering or production changes, support continuous improvement initiatives, and review plant spending to promote responsible cost management.

• At least 5 years of accounting or finance experience, including work in a manufacturing environment; automotive industry experience is strongly preferred.
• Previous experience serving as a Plant Controller within a manufacturing operation.
• Strong knowledge of standard cost accounting, general ledger activity, financial statement preparation, account reconciliations, and adjusting journal entries.
• Experience with budgeting, forecasting, month-end close, variance analysis, annual reporting, inventory accounting, and inventory analysis.
• Proven ability to lead teams, manage multiple priorities, and work effectively with cross-functional partners.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills, sound judgment, and the ability to handle sensitive information with discretion.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office and familiarity with business intelligence or enterprise resource planning systems.
