What is a senior performance test engineer?

Senior Performance Test Engineers are specialized professionals responsible for designing, executing, and analyzing performance tests to ensure software applications meet required speed, scalability, and stability standards. They identify system bottlenecks, recommend improvements, and collaborate with development and operations teams to optimize application performance. With years of experience, they often lead performance testing strategies, mentor junior testers, and use advanced tools to simulate high-stress scenarios. Their work ensures that applications can handle expected user loads and perform reliably under various conditions.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a senior performance test engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Senior Performance Test Engineer, you need advanced knowledge of software testing methodologies, scripting languages, and a degree in computer science or a related field. Expertise in tools like JMeter, LoadRunner, or Gatling and familiarity with CI/CD pipelines are typically required, along with relevant certifications such as ISTQB. Strong analytical thinking, problem-solving skills, and effective communication set top performers apart in this role. These skills and qualifications are vital to accurately assess system performance, identify bottlenecks, and ensure robust, scalable applications.

What are some common challenges faced by senior performance test engineers when working on large-scale applications?

Senior Performance Test Engineers often encounter challenges such as accurately simulating real-world user loads, identifying bottlenecks in complex, distributed environments, and ensuring test data and environments closely mirror production. Collaborating with development and operations teams to resolve performance issues can also be demanding, especially when root causes are not immediately apparent. Staying current with evolving tools and best practices is essential to effectively address these challenges and deliver reliable, high-performing applications.

What is the difference between Senior Performance Test Engineer vs Performance Test Engineer?

Senior Software Test Engineer – Job Description

Job Title: Senior Software Test Engineer
Department: Engineering
Reports To: Engineering Manager / QA Lead
FLSA Status: Exempt / Full-time

Salary Range:  $100,000-$140,000 Annually

Summary:
This position is for an Embedded Software Engineer with a strong passion for testing. The role focuses on creating embedded test code, verifying that results meet requirements, documenting outcomes, correcting implementation code when needed, and developing and executing practical test plans and procedures to ensure embedded products perform as expected. The engineer will collaborate closely with a cross‑functional team of embedded software, hardware, and systems engineers.

The ideal candidate has a background in computer or software engineering with a solid grasp of embedded software, firmware, and electronic concepts as they relate to testing. Responsibilities include interpreting and refining requirements, translating them into efficient embedded test plans and procedures, architecting test tools, writing test software and scripts, and ensuring thorough test coverage within project constraints. The engineer will build and maintain embedded test setups, test software, and automation scripts; troubleshoot issues; analyze results; and clearly communicate findings to design, production, and quality teams. As part of the Aeronix engineering organization, this role also contributes hands‑on to improving test frameworks, methodologies, documentation, and overall embedded product validation processes.

Responsibilities:

  • Analyze and refine customer and engineering requirements, ensuring clarity, completeness, testability, and strong traceability across software, hardware, and system levels.
  • Design, develop, and automate test plans, procedures, protocols, software, and scripts to create a robust, engineering‑grade verification pipeline that ties test artifacts back to its originating requirement.
  • Apply software‑engineering practices to full lifecycle testing of embedded systems, including development and enhancement of unit, integration, regression, performance, and functional tests using both manual and automated methods.
  • Build, maintain, and evolve automated test frameworks and tooling to improve coverage, reliability, and developer efficiency, treating test infrastructure as critical software.
  • Work collaboratively with cross‑functional engineering teams (Software, Electrical, Mechanical) and Program Management to ensure testability is built into designs early and maintained throughout development.
  • Execute verification activities across functional, environmental, and reliability domains, thoroughly documenting results, analyzing issues, and communicating technical findings to stakeholders.
  • Contribute to root cause and corrective action (RCCA) efforts by approaching failures with a software‑engineering mindset focused on debugging, system behavior insights, and long‑term robustness.
  • Continuously improve test methods, automation strategies, frameworks, and documentation to drive higher quality, stronger traceability, and better engineering outcomes.

Required Skills:

  • Strong proficiency in C/C++ programming for embedded Linux, RTOS and Bare-metal environments.
  • Experience in C# for creating GUIs that can communicate to embedded devices.
  • Experience with scripting languages like Python and Bash.
  • Experience integrating software with custom processor-based circuit card assemblies.
  • Experience in requirements development and management.
  • Familiarity with formal verification procedures.
  • Ability to work effectively in a team environment on projects with a large number of requirements.
  • Familiarity with Atlassian product suite (JIRA, Confluence, BitBucket).
  • Knowledge of Requirements frameworks, especially DOORS, Jama and Excel.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering (Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Software Engineering, or related field).
  • 5+ years of experience in software development supporting embedded systems with product and systems testing experience preferred.
  • Experience in developing requirements, performing stakeholder analysis and creating validation and verification procedures.
  • Knowledge of Requirements frameworks, especially DOORS, Jama and Excel.
  • Experience with testing equipment, instrumentation, and data acquisition tools.
  • Excellent communication and documentation skills.
  • Familiarity with version control systems (e.g., Git) and CI/CD pipelines.
  • Experience with programming/scripting languages (e.g., C, Python, C#).
  • Experience in test automation tools (e.g., Selenium, Cypress, Playwright, JUnit, TestNG) is a plus.
  • Knowledge of Ethernet, Serial RapidIO, and other networking communications is a plus.
  • Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in cross-functional teams.
  • US Person required.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a DoD Secret clearance (active Interim Secret or Secret clearance preferred).
  • This is not a remote position; roles are available in Melbourne, FL and Greenville, SC.
