What is a senior network engineer?

Senior Network Engineers are experienced IT professionals responsible for designing, implementing, and managing complex computer networks within organizations. They oversee network infrastructure, troubleshoot issues, ensure network security, and optimize performance. Typically, they lead network projects, mentor junior staff, and collaborate with other IT teams to support business operations. Their expertise covers a range of technologies, including routers, switches, firewalls, and cloud networking.

What are some common challenges faced by senior network engineers when managing large-scale network infrastructures?

Senior Network Engineers often encounter challenges such as integrating new technologies into legacy systems, ensuring network security across a growing number of devices, and maintaining high availability while performing upgrades or troubleshooting. Balancing the demands of multiple stakeholders—like IT, security, and business units—can also be complex. Staying updated with evolving protocols and proactively identifying potential performance bottlenecks are crucial parts of effectively managing large-scale environments.

What does a senior network engineer do?

A senior network engineer builds and maintains data communication networks for a company or organization. As a senior network engineer, you have several years of industry experience and lead a team of junior network engineers and network administrators to ensure both the local area network (LAN) and wide area network (WAN) are functioning properly. Your job duties include installing software and hardware, creating a layout plan for cables, and troubleshooting and solving problems that arise with the networks for which you are responsible.

Job Description

Be the exception. Build and operate exceptional networks.

Technium designs, builds, and operates secure, cloud-connected network fabrics that power mission-critical industries – from biotech, healthcare, finance, and research.

We’re a small company with a startup’s energy and enterprise standards. Our team thrives on curiosity, accountability, and collaboration. We take pride in delivering excellence while fostering a culture where learning and leadership are encouraged at every level.

As a Level 3 Network Engineer, you are a highly skilled and experienced professional responsible for designing, implementing, and maintaining complex network infrastructures. Your expertise goes beyond basic troubleshooting, as you handle escalated issues, optimize network performance, and contribute to strategic planning. With a deep understanding of networking protocols, hardware, and security, you play a crucial role in ensuring the reliability, scalability, and security of the organization's network environment. Your advanced technical knowledge and problem-solving abilities make you an invaluable asset in maintaining seamless network operations and driving continuous improvement to meet the evolving needs of the business. Additionally, your effective communication and collaboration skills enable you to work closely with cross-functional teams and vendors to deliver innovative network solutions.

  • Exhibit ownership through a customer-first approach using knowledge and care as key differentiators.
  • Escalation Support: Act as the highest level of technical escalation for complex network issues raised by Tier 1 and Tier 2 engineers. Resolve and troubleshoot critical incidents with a focus on minimizing downtime and service disruptions.
  • Network Troubleshooting: Analyze and diagnose intricate network problems, including but not limited to routing issues, network congestion, QoS challenges, and firewall misconfigurations.
  • Incident Management: Respond promptly and effectively to network incidents, conducting thorough root cause analysis, and implementing long-term solutions to prevent recurring issues.
  • Network Design and Optimization: Collaborate with the network architecture team to design, implement, and optimize network solutions aligned with business objectives, ensuring scalability and reliability.
  • Pre-Sales Support: Collaborate with the sales team to understand client requirements and tailor technical solutions accordingly. Assist in the preparation of proposals, technical documentation, and presentations to demonstrate the value of the products and services.
  • Solution Design: Participate in solution design and architecture discussions, offering technical recommendations to meet customer needs effectively.
  • Customer Demos and POCs: Conduct product demonstrations and Proof of Concepts (POCs) to showcase the functionality and benefits of the solutions to potential customers.
  • Documentation: Maintain comprehensive and up-to-date network documentation, including network diagrams, standard operating procedures, and troubleshooting guides.
  • Continuous Improvement: Stay abreast of emerging networking technologies, industry trends, and best practices. Recommend and lead initiatives to enhance network performance, reliability, and security.
  • Services: Duties are expected to be performed in normal duty hours but there may be events that will occur during non- duty hours, weekends or holidays that may require work to be accomplished. This role is expected to provide on-call support during non-duty hours when needed.
  • This role will be part of our on-call rotation, including some night and weekend work as needed
