What is a senior network engineer?

Senior Network Engineers are experienced IT professionals responsible for designing, implementing, and managing complex computer networks within organizations. They oversee network infrastructure, troubleshoot issues, ensure network security, and optimize performance. Typically, they lead network projects, mentor junior staff, and collaborate with other IT teams to support business operations. Their expertise covers a range of technologies, including routers, switches, firewalls, and cloud networking.

What does a senior network engineer do?

A senior network engineer builds and maintains data communication networks for a company or organization. As a senior network engineer, you have several years of industry experience and lead a team of junior network engineers and network administrators to ensure both the local area network (LAN) and wide area network (WAN) are functioning properly. Your job duties include installing software and hardware, creating a layout plan for cables, and troubleshooting and solving problems that arise with the networks for which you are responsible.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a senior network engineer, and why are they important?

To excel as a Senior Network Engineer, you need a deep understanding of network architecture, protocols, security, and typically a bachelor's degree in computer science or a related field. Expertise in configuring and troubleshooting routers, switches, firewalls, and experience with tools like Cisco IOS, Juniper, or cloud networking platforms, along with certifications such as CCNP or CCIE, are highly valued. Strong problem-solving abilities, communication skills, and leadership are crucial for designing solutions and collaborating with IT teams. These competencies ensure reliable, secure, and scalable network infrastructures that support critical business operations.

What are some common challenges faced by senior network engineers when managing large-scale network infrastructures?

Senior Network Engineers often encounter challenges such as integrating new technologies into legacy systems, ensuring network security across a growing number of devices, and maintaining high availability while performing upgrades or troubleshooting. Balancing the demands of multiple stakeholders—like IT, security, and business units—can also be complex. Staying updated with evolving protocols and proactively identifying potential performance bottlenecks are crucial parts of effectively managing large-scale environments.

What is the difference between Senior Network Engineer vs Network Administrator?

AspectSenior Network EngineerNetwork Administrator
CertificationsCCNP, CCIE, Cisco certificationsCCNA, CompTIA Network+
Work EnvironmentDesign, implement, and troubleshoot complex networksMaintain and support existing network infrastructure
ResponsibilitiesNetwork architecture, advanced troubleshooting, project leadershipNetwork setup, monitoring, routine maintenance

While both roles involve network management, a Senior Network Engineer focuses on designing and implementing complex network solutions, often leading projects. In contrast, a Network Administrator primarily maintains and supports existing networks, ensuring smooth daily operations.

The State of South Carolina is looking for a Network Architect - Consultant

Why is this position open: The Division of Information Technology has an immediate need for highly specialized enterprise network engineering expertise to support critical infrastructure initiatives and ensure operational continuity across the University's enterprise technology environment.

Work Location: Role is fully onsite

Candidate MUST be a SC resident or willing to relocate to SC prior to starting the role at their own expense.

Additional details: Candidates must be US Citizens or Legal Residents.

SCOPE OF THE PROJECT:

This position will provide advanced engineering expertise necessary to complete critical enterprise networking projects, improve infrastructure resiliency, modernize aging systems, and establish technical standards that support the University's long-term strategic objectives. The engagement will also provide technical leadership and knowledge transfer to strengthen ongoing operational support capabilities.

This is an on-site position at the downtown Columbia campus. Occasional remote work is permissible, but the majority of work will take place on site.

The Senior Network Engineer will serve as the Division's senior technical resource for enterprise network architecture, engineering, modernization, and operational excellence. Working collaboratively with Enterprise Architecture, Network Operations, Information Security, Cloud Services, Facilities Planning, project teams, vendors, and campus stakeholders, the incumbent will design, implement, and optimize the enterprise networking environment.

•Provide architecture and engineering leadership for enterprise LAN, WAN, wireless, data center, cloud, hybrid networking, and network security technologies.

•Lead complex network infrastructure projects and modernization initiatives that improve reliability, resiliency, scalability, security, and operational efficiency.

•Develop enterprise network architecture standards, engineering standards, reference architectures, technical roadmaps, lifecycle recommendations, and supporting documentation.

•Design highly available network infrastructure and connectivity across campus, data center, cloud, and external service environments.

•Advance network automation, orchestration, Infrastructure as Code, and deployment practices that improve consistency, efficiency, and reliability.

•Develop and improve enterprise monitoring, observability, alerting, analytics, capacity planning, and operational metrics supporting proactive infrastructure management.

•Provide senior technical leadership for complex infrastructure issues, priority incidents, architecture decisions, and advanced engineering challenges.

•Coordinate network architecture and engineering initiatives with Network Operations, Information Security, Cloud Services, Physical Network Infrastructure, Facilities Planning, project teams, vendors, contractors, and campus stakeholders.

•Evaluate emerging technologies, support technical procurement and vendor evaluations, and provide knowledge transfer and documentation supporting long-term operational sustainability.

DAILY DUTIES / RESPONSIBILITIES:

•Provide technical and project leadership for enterprise network architecture, advanced engineering, modernization, and infrastructure implementation initiatives, including hands-on engineering when required.

•Develop and maintain enterprise network architectures, engineering standards, technical roadmaps, network diagrams, and other technical documentation; review and validate network designs and engineering solutions developed by other technical staff.

•Analyze institutional, business, and technical requirements and translate them into enterprise network designs and implementation strategies.

•Lead network modernization, lifecycle planning, capacity planning, and remediation of aging or at-risk infrastructure.

•Develop and implement monitoring, observability, automation, orchestration, and operational metrics to proactively assess and improve enterprise network health, capacity, performance, and operational efficiency.

•Serve as a senior technical resource and Tier III escalation point for complex network incidents and engineering issues, performing advanced troubleshooting and providing architecture-level guidance and resolution when required.

•Coordinate architecture and engineering activities with Network Operations, Information Security, Physical Network Infrastructure, Facilities Planning, project teams, contractors, consultants, vendors, and other stakeholders.

•Evaluate emerging technologies and solutions and provide technical recommendations supporting procurement, investment, and long-term infrastructure planning.
