BRIEF POSITION SUMMARY
Performs advanced (seniorlevel) construction , restoration, renovation, and maintenance work. Work involves building repair, renovation, restoration, and alteration. Installation, maintenance, and repair work of plumbing systems and components. Work involves coordinating the assembly, installation, or repair of pipes, fittings, or fixtures of heating, water, and/or draining systems. May serve as a lead worker providing directions to others. Reports to Maintenance Supervisor. Works under minimal supervision, with considerable latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment.
WORK HOURS: Tuesday Friday, 10 hours a day, 40 hours a week
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Coordinates and performs pipe cutting, welding, preassembly, and/or installation of plumbing systems or components.
  • Coordinates and prepares work orders, reports, and records.
  • Performs troubleshooting and preventative maintenance tasks on plumbing and structural equipment.
  • Assembles pipe sections, tubing, or fittings using couplings, clamps, screws, bolts, cement, plastic solvent, caulking, or soldering, brazing, or welding equipment.
  • Installs pipe assemblies, fittings, valves, appliances, or fixtures.
  • Locates and marks the position of pipe connections, passage holes, or fixtures in structures.
  • Cuts, threads, or bends pipe to required angles using hand or power tools or machines.
  • Reviews blueprints, building codes, or specifications to determine work details or procedures.
  • Recommends and installs energyefficient equipment and alternative water sources.
  • Makes estimates related to time, materials, for repair jobs.
  • Inspect structures to assess material or equipment needed.
  • Welds small pipes or special piping using specialized techniques, equipment, or materials.
  • Conducts annual inspections and testing on backflows.
  • May Coordinates or schedules building repair, renovation, or restoration projects.
  • Performs repairs and renovations to modernize a building or adapt it to new uses while retaining original appearance.
  • May serve as a lead worker providing directions to others.
  • May train others.
  • Attends work regularly and observes approved work hours in accordance with agency state employee policies and procedures handbook.
  • May be required to perform duty in support of national emergencies, disasters and other missions, to include holidays and weekends.
  • Performs related work as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
EDUCATION:
  • Graduation from a standard senior high school or equivalent (GED) is required.

EXPERIENCE:
  • Four (4) years of experience in construction management or building maintenance and repair work is required.
  • Experience in using Microsoft Office applications including Word and Excel is required.

PREFERRED EXPERIENCE:
  • Experience in the testing and repair of various size backflows and valves

REGISTRATION, CERTIFICATION OR LICENSURE:
  • Valid driver's license is required. If not currently a Texas resident, must obtain a Texas Driver's License within 30 days after entering Texas as a new resident. A satisfactory driving record is required for operating state or personal vehicles to conduct agency business.
  • Ability to acquire Backflow Prevention Assembly Tester (BPAT) license within 90 days of being hired. (Classes provided)

OTHER REQUIREMENTS:
  • Background Investigation . Selected candidate must be able to obtain a CAC and/or pass a federal security background investigation. The process includes a National Agency Check and Inquiry (NACI) and fingerprinting. New employees must complete and sign the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Form SF85. Completed forms are submitted to the OPM for the background investigations.
  • Eligibility to Work in the U.S. The Immigration Reform and Control Act of 1986 requires all new employees to present proof of eligibility to work in the United States within three (3) days of being hired. The Texas Military Department participates in EVerify and will provide the Social Security Administration (SSA) and, if necessary, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), with information from each new employee's Form I9 to confirm work authorization. All offers of employment are contingent upon the candidate having and maintaining legal authorization to work in the United States. Failure to present such authorization within the time specified by the U.S. Department of Labor will result in the offer being rescinded.
  • Sponsorship . Candidates must be eligible to work in the United States without requiring sponsorship.
  • Upon hire with the State of Texas, males between the ages of 18 through 25 must provide proof of registration or exemption with the Selective Service. For further information, visit the Selective Service website at https://www.sss.gov/register/

Knowledge of:

  • read and interpret blueprints, sketches, and specifications;
  • communicate effectively;
  • serve as a lead worker providing direction to others; and
  • work in a military environment.

PHYSICAL/WORKING CONDITIONS
Office work is generally performed in a sedentary office setting, involving sitting, standing and walking to perform job duties. Office work requires extensive use of a personal computer and telephone. Candidate must also be able to lift, carry, move and/or set up equipment and materials weighing up to 125 pounds. Special assignments may occasionally be performed outdoors with exposure to inclement or hot weather.
