We are looking for an experienced Senior Underwriter to review complex merchant applications, assess elevated financial and operational risk, and serve as a knowledgeable resource for the underwriting team.
This role is a great fit for someone with strong merchant services expertise who can independently evaluate challenging applications, exercise sound judgment, and help improve the consistency and quality of underwriting decisions across the department.
RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Independently review complex, high-volume, high-risk, or escalated merchant applications
  • Analyze merchant creditworthiness, financial stability, business models, processing history, ownership structures, and operational risk
  • Interpret consumer and business credit reports, financial statements, tax returns, bank statements, processing statements, corporate records, websites, and supporting documentation
  • Evaluate card-not-present, e-commerce, recurring billing, future delivery, high-ticket, and other elevated-risk business models
  • Approve, pend, decline, or recommend conditions for applications within assigned authority levels
  • Provide clear and well-supported underwriting rationale for complex decisions
  • Review escalated applications and assist with exception requests
  • Identify potential fraud, bust-out risk, credit risk, prohibited activity, and inconsistencies across application materials
  • Partner with Risk, Compliance, Sales, Operations, and sponsor bank contacts to resolve application concerns
  • Serve as a resource for Underwriter team members by answering questions and providing guidance
  • Support training, application calibration, and quality-review activities
  • Review underwriting decisions for accuracy, consistency, and adherence to company and sponsor bank requirements
  • Identify trends, recurring application issues, and opportunities to improve underwriting procedures
  • Assist with developing and updating underwriting procedures, reference materials, and decisioning guidelines
  • Support department coverage, queue management, and priority application reviews when needed
  • Perform additional duties as assigned

QUALIFICATIONS
  • Advanced knowledge of merchant services underwriting, credit analysis, and payment-processing risk
  • Strong understanding of merchant business models, transaction risk, chargebacks, fraud exposure, and sponsor bank requirements
  • Ability to interpret complex financial statements, tax returns, bank statements, processing histories, and corporate structures
  • Strong judgment and ability to make defensible decisions when information is incomplete or risk factors conflict
  • Ability to recognize higher-risk industries, prohibited activities, unusual ownership structures, and potential misrepresentation
  • Excellent analytical, investigative, and problem-solving skills
  • Excellent written communication and ability to document detailed underwriting rationale
  • Ability to provide constructive guidance and explain complex underwriting decisions
  • Strong organization and time-management skills in a high-volume environment
  • Ability to work independently and manage competing priorities
  • Strong working knowledge of Microsoft Office, Adobe Acrobat, CRM platforms, and third-party underwriting tools

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
  • 3+ years of merchant services underwriting experience required
  • Experience independently reviewing complex or elevated-risk merchant applications required
  • Experience with financial analysis, reserves, exceptions, conditional approvals, and underwriting escalations preferred
  • Experience mentoring or training junior underwriters preferred
  • Experience using TSYS systems preferred

SALARY:
This role includes biannual profit-sharing bonuses as part of a total compensation package, in addition to a full range of medical, dental, retirement planning, and/or other benefits.
  • Base salary range: $65,000 - $68,500
  • Salary including quarterly profit-sharing bonus and comprehensive benefits program range (annualized): $85,725- $89,925
