Job description

Senior Marine Engineer
Oakland
Regular, Full-Time
Hybrid
Are you interested in joining an engineering consulting firm that delivers value to clients, communities, and individuals around the world? Could you contribute to our efforts through high-level technical assistance on marine and waterfront initiatives? Then this could be the next step in your career!
Create the solutions that will enable a better tomorrow
We are seeking a Senior Marine Engineer to join our team in Oakland. In this role, you will collaborate with a global team of experts and work closely with your Technical Director and Project Managers to deliver critical marine infrastructure projects across North America.
You will be part of COWI North America's Marine Practice, a team of approximately 60 experienced marine professionals located across the U.S. and Canada, and supported by a global organization of more than 7,500 employees worldwide. COWI is well known for its expertise in marine, waterfront, and port structures, offering services from dive inspections to coastal and geotechnical work across the entire project lifecycle. Our services range from targeted technical consulting to comprehensive planning, engineering design, and construction oversight.
Your key responsibilities will be to:
  • Perform a wide range of complex structural engineering tasks for marine infrastructure projects, applying broad and deep technical expertise across waterfront and heavy-civil environments.
  • Perform structural analysis and design for reinforced and prestressed concrete, steel structures, deep foundations, and earth-retaining systems, ensuring all work aligns with applicable codes, standards, and client requirements.
  • Prepare and review detailed engineering deliverables including calculations, technical reports, memoranda, construction drawings, and technical specifications that support high-quality project execution.
  • Provide technical leadership by guiding engineering teams through project delivery, offering direct guidance, and mentoring project members to enhance their technical abilities and project outcomes.
  • Manage major marine infrastructure projects for clients such as the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, U.S. Navy, Port of San Francisco, and Port of Oakland, overseeing coordination, construction support, and on-site inspections.

Your skills. Our team. Together we design the future
The first step to growth in this role is that you are willing to collaborate with the people around you, whether they are colleagues, partners, or customers. Developing ties with others is something you do by acting respectfully and delivering on your promises. And you never get set in your ways but keep exploring new insights and ways to improve.
On top of that, you will have:
  • An M.S. or higher in Civil or Structural Engineering, paired with 10+ years of experience in marine infrastructure, coastal engineering, or other heavy-civil disciplines.
  • A current Professional Engineer (PE) license and the ability to serve as a technical authority on multidisciplinary projects.
  • Willingness to travel and perform fieldwork (approximately 10%) to support site visits, inspections, and construction activities.
  • Clear and professional communication and the ability to build effective relationships with clients, partners, and project teams.
