Job description

Senior Infrastructure & Cloud Modernization Engineer

Compass Pointe Consulting is seeking a highly experienced Senior Infrastructure & Cloud Modernization Engineer to lead the support, stabilization, and modernization of a complex hybrid infrastructure environment.

This position combines hands-on infrastructure operations with strategic engineering leadership. The successful candidate will assume technical ownership of a primarily Linux-based virtualized environment, including legacy Red Hat Enterprise Linux systems, while developing and executing modernization strategies that support cloud adoption, automation, improved security, and long-term reliability.

The Senior Infrastructure & Cloud Modernization Engineer will also serve as a senior technical escalation point and mentor junior engineering staff.

Key Responsibilities:

Infrastructure Operations
Administer, maintain, and troubleshoot legacy Red Hat Enterprise Linux environments.
Manage and optimize VMware or comparable enterprise virtualization platforms.
Oversee enterprise backup, retention, restoration, and disaster recovery operations.
Monitor infrastructure performance, availability, capacity, and system health.
Resolve complex infrastructure issues across Linux, Windows, virtualization, storage, and backup environments.

Windows Infrastructure Administration
Administer Microsoft Windows Server and Active Directory environments.
Support DNS, DHCP, Group Policy, identity management, and access controls.
Maintain interoperability and authentication between Linux and Windows systems.
Troubleshoot issues affecting hybrid infrastructure services and user access.

Infrastructure and Cloud Modernization
Assess aging infrastructure and identify modernization opportunities, risks, and technical dependencies.
Develop practical roadmaps for migrating legacy systems to modern, cloud-capable, or hybrid platforms.
Support cloud adoption initiatives involving AWS, Microsoft Azure, or comparable platforms.
Recommend architectural, security, automation, and operational improvements that reduce technical debt.
Evaluate modernization options while maintaining the availability and stability of critical systems.

Technical Leadership
Serve as the senior technical escalation point for complex infrastructure challenges.
Establish engineering standards, operational procedures, and infrastructure best practices.
Create and maintain accurate system documentation, diagrams, runbooks, and recovery procedures.
Mentor junior engineers and technical support personnel.
Communicate technical risks, recommendations, and modernization priorities to both technical and business stakeholders.

Security and Reliability
Support vulnerability remediation, infrastructure hardening, patching, and configuration management.
Validate backup integrity and periodically test restoration and disaster recovery processes.
Participate in incident response, root cause analysis, and corrective-action planning.
Help ensure infrastructure complies with applicable security, availability, and operational requirements.

Required Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree in computer science, information technology, engineering, or a related technical field.
10–12 years of enterprise infrastructure engineering experience.
Deep experience administering Red Hat Enterprise Linux, including the support and modernization of legacy Linux environments.
Experience managing VMware virtualization platforms or comparable enterprise virtualization technologies.
Experience supporting enterprise backup, retention, restoration, and disaster recovery solutions.
Strong knowledge of Windows Server, Active Directory, DNS, DHCP, and Group Policy.
Demonstrated experience leading infrastructure modernization, data center transformation, or cloud migration initiatives.
Advanced systems analysis, troubleshooting, and root-cause analysis capabilities.
Ability to lead technical initiatives and mentor junior team members.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications:
Experience with AWS, Microsoft Azure, or hybrid cloud infrastructure.
Automation and scripting experience using Bash, PowerShell, Ansible, Python, or similar technologies.
Experience supporting operational technology, scientific, laboratory, research, or engineering environments.
Experience developing infrastructure roadmaps and migration plans.
Relevant certifications, including RHCSA, RHCE, VMware, Microsoft, AWS, Azure, or comparable credentials.
