Job description

Purpose This position is responsible for conducting laboratory analysis on wastewater, surface waters, and biosolids for compliance sampling, process control, and investigative sampling, analyzed according to approved EPA methods. Essential Job Functions Performs metal analysis using an atomic absorption spectrometer, autosampler, and Multiware Microwave for digestion of samples. Performs oil and grease analysis using liquid phase extractors and Speed Vap III. Performs analyses on wastewater, industrial, and surface waters.

Operates the Total Organic Carbon (TOC)/ Total Nitrogen (TN) analyzer. Conducts toxicity testing using bioluminescent bacteria and BTEX analysis using GC-MS and Rapid Assay technique. Conducts conventional laboratory analysis.

Trains, assists, monitors, and reviews analytical procedures done by lab personnel for accuracy and completeness. Inspects instruments/equipment to ensure safe operating conditions; calibrates instruments; performs routine preventive maintenance on instruments. Troubleshoots.

Interprets and reviews data generated by various automated instrumentation. Ensures accuracy and adherence to QA/QC program. Reports findings into laboratory database (LIMS).

Notifies supervisor of non-conformance issues with data. Monitors lab inventory and gas cylinder levels, and requests items to be ordered as needed. Performs other related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications Requires a Bachelor's Degree in Chemistry, Biology, or a related science field; with two (2) years of experience as a Laboratory Technician; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Requires Wastewater Laboratory Analyst License. Must possess and maintain a valid state driver's license with an acceptable driving history.

Additional Requirements Background investigation, including supervised drug screen, post offer/pre-employment medical screen; and verification of education, certifications, and licenses required prior to employment. Additional Information Knowledge of laboratory analytical procedures and methods. Knowledge of EPA and EPD regulations and requirements.

Knowledge of city and department policies and procedures. Knowledge of operation and maintenance of advanced analytical instruments. Knowledge of chemicals, instruments, and equipment used in laboratory analysis.

Skill in conducting research and evaluating complex technical information. Skill in performing mathematical calculations and statistical analysis. Skill in reading and interpreting technical instruction manuals.

Skill in matrix interferences and ability to overcome them. Skill in utilizing a computer and specialized software programs. Skill in operating standard and specialized laboratory tools, equipment, meters, and instruments.
