What is a senior innovation engineer?

Senior Innovation Engineers are experienced professionals who lead the development and implementation of new technologies, products, or processes within a company. They identify opportunities for innovation, manage projects from concept to execution, and often collaborate with cross-functional teams to solve complex problems. Their role involves staying updated on industry trends, leveraging advanced engineering techniques, and driving continuous improvement to help organizations stay competitive. Typically, they have a strong background in engineering, creativity, and project management.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a senior innovation engineer?

To thrive as a Senior Innovation Engineer, you need a strong background in engineering principles, creative problem-solving, and experience with research and development, typically supported by an advanced degree in engineering or related fields. Familiarity with innovation management tools, prototyping technologies, and methodologies like Design Thinking or Agile is common, along with certifications such as Six Sigma or PMP being advantageous. Excellent communication, leadership, and the ability to drive cross-functional collaboration are essential soft skills. These competencies are critical for successfully leading projects from concept to implementation and fostering a culture of continuous improvement and innovation.

Job description

The Enablement Strategist II serves as a senior delivery and enablement professional within the Innovation Unit, translating strategic innovation initiatives into executable programs, projects, and services. This role partners closely with campus stakeholders, Innovation Engineers, and cross-functional IT teams to break down complex problems, define implementation plans, coordinate delivery activities, and ensure successful adoption of innovative solutions.

Operating as a bridge between vision and execution, the Enablement Strategist II focuses on tactical implementation, stakeholder engagement, documentation, and delivery coordination, ensuring that Innovation initiatives are wellโ€‘scoped, effectively communicated, and sustainably supported once deployed. This position requires strong program and project leadership, excellent communication skills, and the ability to work handsโ€‘on with customers and technical teams to move ideas from concept to operational reality.

Key Responsibilities
  • Lead the tactical implementation of Innovation initiatives by translating strategic vision into actionable plans, deliverables, and execution roadmaps
  • Partner with campus stakeholders to understand needs, decompose complex problems, and define clear requirements and success criteria
  • Coordinate closely with Innovation Engineers and technical teams to support solution development, provide feedback, and ensure alignment with stakeholder expectations
  • Design, configure, and deploy innovative solutions using no-code and low-code platforms (e.g., workflow automation tools, AIโ€‘assisted configuration, and configurable SaaS capabilities) to rapidly address campus needs without traditional software development
  • Evaluate use cases for โ€œclicks-not-codeโ€ approaches, determine feasibility and limitations, and guide stakeholders toward appropriate solution patterns. Partner with Innovation Engineers to identify when no-code/low-code solutions are sufficient versus when custom development is required. Promote responsible, secure, and scalable use of no-code tools in alignment with enterprise standards and AI governance principles.
  • Develop training materials and lead handsโ€‘on workshops and effective, multimodal training sessions to enable campus partners to confidently use new services and solutions
  • Manage program and projectโ€‘level activities including planning, documentation, stakeholder communication, and delivery tracking
  • Support adoption and sustainability through documentation, training coordination, and transition planning
  • Serve as a trusted point of contact for customers throughout the lifecycle of Innovation initiatives, from project initiation through delivery and support
