Job Description 

The Printer Operator is responsible for the operation, changeover, setup, troubleshooting, cleanliness, and basic maintenance of can line decorators (printers) and associated equipment, including paint systems and ovens. 

Essential Functions: 

  • Remain up-to-date on the production schedule, including all label changes occurring on a given shift. 

  • Communicate with Printer Operator from previous shift regarding maintenance, operational, and safety issues, review any issues associated with product and label quality, and perform immediate visual and dimensional inspection of can. 

  • Check and stock all supply by his or her workstation including, but not limited to the following: blanket wash, varnish, gloves, and paper towels. 

  • Inform the Shift Supervisor of any problems with the printer or paint line that occurred on the previous shift or is likely to occur on his or her shift. 

  • Take responsibility for the cleanliness of litter at or around workstation, maintaining clean ink cans (keep lids in place), varnish spills, caps, and cans. 

  • Maintain condition of printing plates by cleaning and recovering plates before returning them to ink room when an order is complete.  

  • Oversee can quality (visual checks against sample cans provided by QA), white tops (application of caps), varnish flow, label quality, cans going to washer, cans being painted, wash and rinse tank levels and cleanliness. 

  • Record accurate and appropriate data on Printer Data and Downtime Sheets. 

  • Monitor machine conditions for lubrications of all roll bushings, cleanliness of rolls (clean then place in roll rack when not being used), cleanliness of inkwells (clean if station(s) not being used), operation of rolls, operation of varnish wheel, varnish tank levels and other issues as needed. 

  • Communicate with the packer and other line team members regarding product quality and process control. 

  • Perform assigned duties as needed. 

Qualifications 

  • High School Diploma/GED or equivalent required.  

  • Previous experience with industrial print equipment and/or machine setup/operation is preferred. 

  • The ability to collaborate with the team to reach production goals. 

  • The ability to troubleshooting, problem solve, perform root cause analysis, and related process improvement activities. 

  • The ability to perform frequent lifting and to perform tasks that require keen vision required.   

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities: 

  • The position requires frequent lifting, keen vision, team orientation, and careful attention to detail. 

  • Keep work areas clean and organized and uphold 5-S principles. 

  • Collaborate with other line employees while supporting troubleshooting, problem solving, root cause analysis, and related process improvement activities.
