Job description

Overview:

The Senior Infrastructure Engineer is a key technical leader responsible for the design, implementation, and optimization of Alterman's core technology infrastructure, with a primary emphasis on the enterprise network. This role provides advanced administration of network, server, virtualization, cloud, and storage environments. The Senior Infrastructure Engineer is expected to assess the current environment, identify gaps and risk, and deliver a ranked remediation plan with clear recommendations to leadership. This role serves as an escalation point for complex infrastructure issues, mentors junior engineers, and leads strategic infrastructure initiatives. This position requires deep expertise in enterprise network and infrastructure technologies and the ability to balance operational excellence with innovation. Documentation is central to this role; the Senior Infrastructure Engineer is expected to thoroughly document all infrastructure designs, configurations, processes, and operational activities.

Essential Functions: 

1. Infrastructure Administration & Optimization: 40%

  • Designs, implements, and manages enterprise network and server infrastructure, including switching, routing, firewalls, physical servers, virtual environments (Nutanix AHV, VMware, Hyper-V), and cloud platforms (Azure).
  • Assesses the current network and infrastructure environment, identifies gaps and risk, and delivers a ranked remediation plan with recommendations on the highest-priority items.
  • Leads advanced troubleshooting and root cause analysis for escalated infrastructure incidents.
  • Develops and maintains automated deployment processes for server provisioning, configuration management, and patch management.
  • Implements advanced security controls, compliance standards, and vulnerability remediation for infrastructure environments.Optimizes performance, scalability, and resilience of infrastructure systems.
  • Monitors system health with proactive alerts, dashboards, and reporting.
  • Maintains and enforces configuration standards, policies, and procedures.

2. System Installation, Configuration & Maintenance: 25%

  • Installs, configures, maintains, and monitors network and server infrastructure to ensure optimal functionality, reliability, and availability.
  • Administers connectivity for managed endpoints, including configuring and optimizing network routing and core hardware.
  • Supports VoIP telephony, data center environments (both physical and cloud-based), endpoint management systems, and print services.
  • Manages data backup operations, contributing to disaster recovery planning and execution.
  • Applies security patches and program updates to protect against vulnerabilities.

3. Mentorship & Collaboration: 15%

  • Provides mentorship and technical guidance to Infrastructure Engineers and other Technology staff.
  • Partners with cross-functional and business teams to assess infrastructure requirements and recommend long-term solutions. 
  • Evaluates and introduces new infrastructure technologies, conducting proof-of-concepts and leading implementations. 
  • Serves as escalation point for the Technology Team on complex infrastructure matters.

4. Strategic Initiatives & Continuous Improvement: 15%

  • Research emerging technologies, tools, and practices to recommend improvements for infrastructure lifecycle management.
  • Prepares and delivers documentation, technical diagrams, and training resources.
  • Participates in vendor management, hardware/software purchases, contract review, and technology roadmaps.
  • Develop knowledge base articles for issue resolution.

5. Performs other duties as assigned. 5%

Education and Experience:

  • Minimum of 5-7 years of experience in network engineering, infrastructure administration, systems engineering, or related technology roles required; OR minimum of 7 years of progressive technology experience.
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Information Systems, or related field preferred; equivalent combination of education and experience will be considered.
  • Microsoft Associate-level or Expert-level certifications preferred (e.g., Azure Administrator Associate, Azure Solutions Architect Expert).
  • Nutanix AHV, VMware VCP or equivalent virtualization certification preferred.
  • ITIL Foundation certification preferred.
  • Cisco CCNA or CCNP, or an equivalent network certification, preferred.

Skills/Abilities:

  • Expert communication skills with the ability to explain complex technical concepts and represent the team in cross-functional discussions.
  • Creative problem-solving skills with the ability to develop innovative solutions and address root causes.
  • Demonstrated ability to mentor and coach technical staff.
  • Excellent time management skills with the ability to manage multiple tasks in a high-pressure environment.
  • PowerShell scripting proficiency required; ability to develop scripts for task automation and system administration.
  • Advanced knowledge of enterprise networking, including TCP/IP, DNS, DHCP, VLANs, routing and switching protocols, and network segmentation.
  • Hands-on experience designing, configuring, and troubleshooting network infrastructure, including switches, routers, firewalls, wireless, and VPN.
  • Demonstrated ability to assess an unfamiliar environment, identify gaps and risk, and deliver a ranked remediation plan with recommendations on the highest-priority work.
  • Strong knowledge of Windows Server operating systems (2016, 2019, 2022), server virtualization platforms (Nutanix AHV, VMware vSphere, Hyper-V), and Microsoft Azure cloud services and hybrid configurations.
  • Strong knowledge of storage area networks (SAN), network-attached storage (NAS), and backup and disaster recovery solutions (Veeam, Azure Backup).
  • Strong knowledge of Active Directory, Group Policy, Microsoft Entra ID, Microsoft 365, and Exchange Online administration. 
  • Able to work overtime and participate in on-call rotation as needed; serves as primary escalation point during incidents.

Work Environment:

  • Office environment and field locations, including regional offices, construction job sites, server rooms, MDFs, IDFs, job trailers, and temporary office spaces. 
  • Occasional work in confined spaces. 
  • Occasional exposure to outdoor conditions such as heat, cold, or dust may occur.

Physical Demands:

  • Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
  • Must be able to lift up to 40 pounds at times.
  • Manual dexterity associated with computer data entry required.
