About the Role

At RWJBH, Central Sterile Processing (CSP) Associate Seniors become part of a highly collaborative perioperative team where precision, teamwork, and patient-centered care support exceptional surgical outcomes. This role offers opportunities for professional growth, advanced clinical experience, and a culture committed to safety, innovation, and continuous improvement.

As a CSP Associate Senior, you will play an essential role leading and guiding sterile processing staff in the reprocessing of reusable instrumentation and equipment. You will handle complex, specialty instrumentation and serve as a vital liaison between the Operating Room, CSP staff, case cart, and case staging personnel to ensure critical surgical needs are met seamlessly. Joining our team means joining a community where every professional is encouraged to grow, contribute, and make a meaningful impact.

A Typical Day

A typical day for a CSP Associate Senior may include:

  • Leadership & Guidance: Leading and guiding the sterile processing staff, resolving complex reprocessing issues, and directly addressing specialized or advanced medical instrumentation and equipment.
  • OR & Case Cart Collaboration: Reviewing the OR schedule with the OR Manager to coordinate loaner/vendor instrumentation needs, and performing daily case cart audits on all first and second surgical procedures to guarantee accuracy.
  • Proactive Communication: Acting as the primary point person for OR personnel to resolve instrument problems before, during, or after procedures, while managing the Priority List so that equipment remains ready and available.
  • Core Technical Functions: Performing all fundamental tasks of a CSP Associate, including retrieving used trays, instruments, and medical equipment from various surgical and clinical hospital units.
  • Quality Assurance & Standards: Inspecting processed instrumentation to verify sterility and functionality according to quality control protocols, while strictly adhering to AORN, AAMI, and Joint Commission monitoring guidelines (biological, chemical, and mechanical).
  • Inventory Control: Maintaining precision organization of peel-packs and tray racks in the case cart staging area to ensure proper inventory levels.
  • Environment of Care: Actively maintaining a safe, secure, and clean environment of care by adhering to Standard Precautions, standard infection control policies, and emergency preparedness/disaster protocols.
  • Professional Development: Participating in departmental quality control initiatives, attending mandatory in-service meetings, and completing educational training to uphold current clinical excellence.

This Role Might Be For You If:

  • You thrive in a fast-paced surgical support environment and can confidently utilize independent judgment and critical thinking under rapidly changing conditions.
  • Strong leadership and effective communication skills allow you to seamlessly manage relationships between CSP teams, case cart staff, and OR professionals.
  • You are deeply committed to patient safety, strict sterile techniques, and maintaining an unquestionable professional attendance and compliance record.
  • You possess the physical stamina necessary for standard clinical operations, including frequent standing, walking, lifting 25 pounds, and transporting equipment up to 50 pounds.

Qualifications & Requirements

To be considered for this CSP Associate Senior opportunity, you must bring a passion for safe, high-quality perioperative support through technical expertise, mature judgment, and collaborative teamwork.

Required:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Work-related experience in a tertiary hospital environment.
  • CRCST (Certified Registered Central Service Technician) credential via HSPA (formerly IAHCSMM) or a CSPDT credential via CBSPD.
  • CIS (Certified Instrument Specialist) credential via HSPA or CBSPD.
  • Commitment to maintaining active professional certification renewal requirements.

Preferred:
