GENERAL SUMMARY:  


The mission of Ed Snider Youth Hockey & Education is to create opportunities for under-resourced youth of the Greater Philadelphia Region to prosper in life. The intended impact is that participating youth will become Snider student-athletes with age-appropriate social-emotional strengths and skills to succeed and contribute as students, employees and community members.  

Snider serves school-aged youth across Philadelphia through year-round programming focused on hockey, education, and life skills. The Hockey Programs Intern will assist the Compete to Grow Coordinator with program delivery, team support, and quality assurance of Snider programs for 10U-14U students. This internship will run from August 2026 - March 2027. 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS & RESPONSIBILITIES: 

  • Work directly with 10U-14U students and families supporting on-ice practices, academic events, and character-building elements.
  • Support gameday operations at Snider Hockey League (SHL) weekend events including evaluating, refereeing, scorekeeping, coaching, handling equipment requests, and providing info for families on Snider's academic and character development programs.
  • Develop relationships with SHL coaches to gather insight on teams/students, feedback on programs, and provide tailored support to each coach/team.
  • Update scores/standings for SHL 10u/12u/14u divisions weekly.
  • Send weekly SHL recaps including scores/standings, organizational resources on events, scholarships or academic support, relevant ice hockey coaching material, and scheduling requests.
  • Assist in designing 1:1 Coach Support meetings.
  • Support data collection and review processes.
  • Support the planning and execution of special events such as; Compete to Grow Development Camp, SHL All-Stars, Snider Science Fair, Compete to Read Challenge, Book Fairs, and more.
  • Travel within the Greater Philadelphia area as required. This role is hybrid, requiring rink visits on nights and weekends, as well as remote work and occasional meetings at Fishtown office during normal business hours.
  • Maintain a flexible work schedule to support program needs.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned. 

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • 1-2 years of experience in a related field (e.g., youth development, education, recreation, or program support) preferred but not required
  • Hockey experience is strongly preferred for this position.
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple tasks and prioritize effectively.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work effectively with diverse populations and age groups.
  • Interest in youth development and a commitment to making a positive impact in the Philadelphia community.
  • Ability to pass required background checks, including PA Child Abuse Clearance, PA State Police Criminal Background Check, and FBI Fingerprinting.

INTELLECTUAL AND SOCIAL DEMANDS: 

While performing the essential functions of this job, the employee is continuously asked to multi-task under time limits. The position requires constant attention to precise details and specified standards, including following simple to complex (more than three steps) instructions, and concentration which frequently extends beyond 30 minutes at a time.  

PHYSICAL DEMANDS: 

While performing the essential functions of the job, the employee will regularly operate a computer and other office devices such as telephones, copy machines, fax machines, etc. Employees will occasionally move about inside office space to access storage areas, cabinets, and office machinery. Local driving in support of work-related projects is necessary. Position will require occasional pushing, pulling, lifting, and/or moving. 

WORK ENVIRONMENT: 

The essential responsibilities of this position are primarily performed indoors, mainly in an office setting but including regular visits to ice hockey rinks, schools, community centers, and special event sites (indoor/outdoor in the weather conditions prevalent at the time).  The noise level in these work environments can range from moderate to loud during events/programs and is minimal during non-event/program times. 

SCHEDULE: 

Most work is completed during standard weekday hours.  Some night (after school) and/or weekend duties in the Greater Philadelphia area are required.
