Job description

Job Requirements

Serves as a senior strategic leader and clinical informatics expert, collaborating with operational and clinical leaders, frontline providers, and IT teams to design, optimize, and implement clinical and business information systems. Provides high-level oversight on complex informatics initiatives, mentors other informaticists, and drives innovation and process improvements that enhance patient safety, quality of care, and operational efficiency. Work is performed under limited supervision. Direct report to the Manager, Clinical Informatics.

Primary Responsibilities

The following statements are intended to describe the general nature and level of work being performed by people assigned to this classification. They are not to be construed as an exhaustive list of all job responsibilities performed.

Lead multidisciplinary teams to assess, design, recommend, and improve clinical and business workflows.

Champion innovation in care delivery by integrating technology and process improvements.

Lead initiatives focused on efficiency and effectiveness of key operations from patient access through the revenue cycle process.

Oversee the planning, testing, deployment, and optimization of clinical and business systems.

Provide expert guidance on system configuration, enhancements, and release management.

Lead support operations during go-lives and stabilization phases, ensuring minimal disruption and maximum user adoption.

Serve as a mentor to Clinical Informaticists and facilitate Super User development programs.

Lead the creation and delivery of scalable education and training materials to ensure optimal system use.

Build and sustain communities of practice that support knowledge sharing and continuous learning.

Interpret clinical, operational, and financial data to guide strategic decisions.

JOB DESCRIPTION

Collaborate with stakeholders to define and track key performance indicators (KPIs) related to informatics initiatives.

Use data-driven insights to support quality improvement, clinical decision-making, and regulatory compliance efforts.

Act as a change agent and organizational influencer to drive adoption of informatics solutions.

Proactively identify and address barriers to change through structured change management approaches.

Build and maintain strong partnerships with leaders across departments to align informatics goals with system-wide priorities.

Contribute to the design, optimization, training, and support of electronic health records (EHR) and related applications, enabling data-driven decision-making, seamless care delivery, and the successful integration of health IT solutions throughout inpatient and outpatient settings, while advocating for equitable design and implementation by identifying and addressing potential biases in data and workflows.

Collaborate with research teams to support clinical trials, data sharing, and integration of research workflows into EHR systems.

Stay current on industry trends, regulatory developments, and new informatics technologies.

Evaluate emerging solutions and recommend innovative tools that enhance care delivery and data utilization.

Represent UMMS in external informatics communities, forums, and benchmarking initiatives.

Perform other duties as assigned.


Work Experience

Education & Experience - Required

Bachelor's degree in Nursing, Health Informatics, Allied Health, Information Technology, or related field, or the equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.

Minimum 3 years of progressive experience in clinical practice, healthcare operations, or clinical informatics.

Minimum 2 years of leadership experience overseeing large-scale, enterprise-wide, or cross-functional informatics or IT initiatives.

Experience with Electronic Health Record (EHR) systems, preferably Epic, including implementation, optimization, or upgrade projects.

Current clinical licensure in the State of Maryland (or Compact-eligible), if applicable.

Epic certification or commitment to achieve and maintain certification within a defined time frame.

Education & Experience - Preferred

Master's degree in Nursing, Health Informatics, Allied Health, Information Technology, or related field.

Certification in Project Management Professional (PMP), Informatics, and/or Performance Improvement (e.g., Lean Six Sigma, or similar).
