What are some typical challenges Senior Functional Safety Engineers face when working on complex automotive projects?

Senior Functional Safety Engineers often encounter challenges such as balancing safety requirements with tight project deadlines and integrating safety processes across multidisciplinary teams. They must coordinate with hardware, software, and system engineers to ensure compliance with ISO 26262, which requires clear communication and strong organizational skills. Additionally, staying updated with evolving safety standards and managing documentation for audits can be demanding. Successfully navigating these complexities is key to delivering safe and reliable automotive systems.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Senior Functional Safety Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Senior Functional Safety Engineer, you need expertise in safety standards (such as ISO 26262 or IEC 61508), strong analytical skills, and a relevant engineering degree. Mastery of safety analysis tools (like FMEA, FMEDA, or Fault Tree Analysis), experience with requirements management systems, and sometimes TÜV certification are typically required. Exceptional problem-solving, stakeholder communication, and attention to detail are vital soft skills in this role. These skills and qualifications ensure the safe design and validation of complex systems, minimizing risk and meeting industry regulations.

Job description

ABOUT THE JOB

Anduril is looking for an experienced and highly skilled Functional Energetics Safety Engineer to lead and implement comprehensive safety programs specifically tailored for the design, development, manufacturing, testing, and handling of energetic materials and systems. This critical role will leverage an engineering background and deep expertise in explosives and energetics safety to ensure rigorous compliance with all applicable EHS, DoD, federal, and industry standards, safeguarding personnel, property, and mission success.

WHAT YOU'LL DO
  • Lead and manage the acquisition and maintenance of licenses, permits, and authorizations related to energetic materials (e.g., ATF, DoD, state fire marshal).
  • Serve as a primary point of contact and subject matter expert for all energetic materials safety matters with regulatory bodies (e.g., ATF, DoD Explosives Safety Board, State Fire Marshal, OSHA, EPA).
  • Establish and maintain adherence to waste management protocols for hazardous and energetic waste, ensuring compliant disposal and demilitarization processes.
  • Develop, implement, and maintain comprehensive explosives safety plans, operating procedures, safety cases, hazard classifications, and quantity distance (QD) calculations for facilities, operations, and test activities.
  • Conduct and document regular and specialized explosives safety inspections, audits, and compliance assessments of facilities, equipment, and operations.
  • Lead and participate in internal and external explosives safety audits, driving the identification of corrective and preventative actions.
  • Develop and deliver specialized training programs on energetic materials safety, including hazard awareness, handling procedures, emergency response, and regulatory compliance.
  • Lead complex hazard analyses and quantitative risk assessments (QRA) for energetic material processes, designs, and operations (e.g., PHA, HAZOP, FMEA, safety cases), ensuring appropriate mitigation strategies are integrated.
  • Investigate all energetic materials-related incidents, near misses, and non-conformances, performing root cause analysis and implementing robust corrective actions.
  • Provide expert on-site technical guidance and direct support for all activities involving energetic materials, from R&D to manufacturing and testing.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Safety Engineering, or a closely related technical discipline.
  • 5+ years of progressive experience in explosives safety engineering, process safety, or a related role within a manufacturing, R&D, or test environment involving energetic materials.
  • Must be able to pass an ATF background check.
  • Demonstrated expertise in conducting explosives safety audits, inspections, hazard classifications, and quantity distance (QD) assessments.
  • Deep and current knowledge of federal explosives safety regulations (e.g., ATF, DoD 6055.09-M, AFMAN 91-201, DA PAM 385-64, NAVSEA OP 5), NFPA codes, and industry best practices for energetic materials.
  • Proven experience in obtaining and managing federal, state, and local licenses, permits, and approvals for energetic materials facilities and operations.
  • Extensive experience with process hazard analysis (PHA), quantitative risk assessment (QRA), root cause analysis for energetic incidents, and robust hazard communication practices.
  • Experience using Microsoft applications.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license, Certified Safety Professional (CSP), or similar professional certification.
  • Advanced degree in a relevant engineering discipline.
  • Experience working in a PSM/RMP regulated facility dealing specifically with energetic materials.
  • Experience in test range safety, insensitive munitions (IM) safety, or demilitarization operations.
