Are you a software developer who wants your technical work to matter for something bigger? The global energy transition is reshaping Canada's economy, and the decisions being made right now will determine whether the country comes out stronger or falls behind. In this role, you will build the models, data products, and interactive tools that put rigorous analysis directly into the hands of the people making those decisions, as part of a small team at the Transition Accelerator. About the Transition Accelerator The Transition Accelerator is helping Canada win in the global energy transition - economically and geopolitically. We are harnessing the global shift towards clean growth to secure permanent jobs, abundant energy, and strong regional economies across the country. We work with 300+ partner organizations to build out pathways to a prosperous low-carbon economy and avoid costly dead-ends along the way. By connecting systems-level thinking and analysis with real-world validation, we are enabling a more affordable, competitive, and resilient future for all Canadians. Work at the Transition Accelerator is collaborative and fast-moving. Priorities evolve as new questions and evidence emerge, and teams are expected to iterate, learn, and adjust. You will work independently on challenging problems while coordinating closely with colleagues and partners. Successful team members are solution-oriented, proposing practical options and paths forward while working collaboratively to address challenges, not just identify them. About the Role You will be the first dedicated software engineer on the I&A team, establishing the engineering practice and infrastructure that turns the organization's analytical work into lasting, usable products. The goal is to make those capabilities faster, deeper, and more accessible - both for internal teams and for the wider analytical community, as we increasingly move to open-source our tools. You will translate complex analytical concepts into working software that people can use to test assumptions, compare scenarios, and make better decisions about Canada's energy future. The role spans the full technical stack: Python model logic, data platform and back-end infrastructure, APIs, and the front-end interfaces that users interact with. You will help establish the production technology stack, set up automated testing and deployment processes, and define how the team builds and ships software. You will work closely with senior leadership to implement product roadmaps, holding technical authority over how things get built while coordinating directly on scope and timing. This is a role where the scope will grow with you. This role is part of the Transition Accelerator's Insights & Analytics (I&A) team and reports to the Vice President, Insights & Analytics. The I&A team leads the development of analytical tools and strategic research projects in close collaboration with teams across the organization working in all sectors of the economy, including our work on buildings, electricity systems, industrial policy, and low-carbon fuels. You will enjoy this role if you like building things end to end, would rather figure out how to do something you haven't done before than wait for someone else to do it, and want your technical work to directly support Canada's energy transition. Duties and Responsibilities Lead the technical development of analytical products from prototype through production, including models, data libraries, and interactive web-based tools. Design software architecture that holds up over time. Products should be extensible without rebuilding and maintainable without the original developer. Contribute across the full stack as needed: data pipelines and processing, Python model logic, data platform and back-end services, APIs, and front-end web interfaces. Operationalize analytical models and prototypes into products that non-technical stakeholders can use to produce their own analysis. Document code, assumptions, data sources, and architecture during development. Ensure products can be understood and extended. Maintain disciplined version control, testing, and release practices across the product portfolio. Validate model outputs and analytical results before release, keeping assumptions traceable and clearly distinguished from calculations. Deploy and operate products across active project workstreams, and keep them running as they change. Set up the automated processes that test code, catch errors early, and move finished work into production without manual steps. Work within the team's product roadmap, making the technical case for different approaches while implementing the decisions that are made. Skills and Experience Required Capabilities Strong proficiency in Python for developing analytical and data-intensive applications, not just scripting or notebook-based analysis. Demonstrated ability to develop and deploy web applications, including front-end interfaces and back-end services. Working knowledge of database design and data infrastructure, API development, and cloud infrastructure. Disciplined use of version control (Git), testing, and documentation as part of a standard development workflow. Ability to take a prototype or analyst-built tool and turn it into a reliable product, including handling edge cases, inconsistent data, and the gap between a demo and a deployable application. Sound judgment on when and where to invest engineering effort in performance, and the ability to diagnose whether a slow tool is limited by its algorithm, data structure, or infrastructure. Clear technical communication, including the ability to synthesize complex modelling outputs for non-technical stakeholders. Comfort figuring out unfamiliar tools, frameworks, or domains as the work requires - and a systematic approach to closing gaps in your own knowledge. Successful Candidates Are Likely to Have... Five or more years of professional software development experience, with a track record of delivering working products across different technical domains or problem spaces. Familiarity with data visualization and designing interfaces that make complex results accessible. Experience on small, cross-functional teams where you own delivery end to end. At least a bachelor's degree in a relevant field (e.g., computer science, engineering, data science, or equivalent experience). Experience using AI-assisted development tools (e.g., Claude, Copilot) as part of a regular workflow. Assets Existing knowledge of or genuine interest in energy systems, particularly electricity supply, energy modeling, or related domains. This is what you will be working with every day, and there is plenty of opportunity to learn on the job. Experience with open-source development practices, including managing public repositories and supporting external contributors. Location This is a full-time, hybrid role for candidates in Montreal, Calgary, or Toronto, or a remote position for candidates located elsewhere in Canada.
