Job description

Overview

The Longshoreman IV represents a senior-level general labor role within terminal and vessel operations. Employees are expected to demonstrate expert-level proficiency in all aspects of cargo handling and vessel operations, with the ability to lead crews and support foremen. The role requires minimal supervision and a high degree of technical skill, safety awareness, and leadership capability. Deep expertise and mastery of general labor tasks. Recognized as a go-to resource for complex or specialized work. Leads training, process optimization, and safety initiatives. Often involved in planning, coordination, and decision-making.


Qualifications

Extensive experience in vessel and terminal operations, including hold work and cargo securing. Advanced training in equipment operation, safety procedures, and cargo handling techniques. Proven ability to lead teams and follow complex operational plans. Strong communication and coordination skills. Physical ability to perform demanding tasks in challenging environments. Demonstrated reliability, professionalism, and commitment to safety.

Conditions: 

Outdoor terminal and warehouse settings. Exposure to varying weather conditions, heavy machinery, and cargo handling equipment. Requires the use of personal protective equipment (PPE). Working at heights, within enclosed spaces, in noisy environments with moving equipment, and in adverse climatic conditions. Informing the supervisor of damaged or unsafe cargo.

Responsibilities

- Hooking and unhooking cargoes in vessel holds.
- Operating powered industrial trucks (PITs), such as small forklifts and yard mules, for cargo stowage.
- Using chainsaws and chop saws for cargo preparation and securing.
- Securing cargo with lashings and carpentry techniques; safely removing lashings.
- Signal crane operators to coordinate safe and efficient cargo movement.
- Follow vessel loading and discharge plans and instructions with precision.
- Ensure compliance with all safety procedures and operational standards.
- Work independently with minimal supervision, demonstrating initiative and accountability.
- Serve as the assistant to the Gang Foreman, acting as the right-hand in crew coordination and task execution.
- Lead the gang in the absence of the Gang Foreman, ensuring continuity of operations and team performance.
- Maintain a clean and safe work environment, identifying and addressing hazards proactively.
