What is a senior FEA engineer?

A Senior FEA (Finite Element Analysis) Engineer is responsible for performing advanced structural, thermal, and mechanical simulations to evaluate product designs. They use finite element methods to analyze stress, strain, fatigue, and other performance factors, ensuring products meet safety and performance standards. They also collaborate with design, manufacturing, and testing teams to optimize designs and troubleshoot engineering challenges. Strong knowledge of FEA software (such as ANSYS or Abaqus) and industry standards is essential. This role typically requires several years of experience in structural analysis, material behavior, and computational modeling.

What are some common daily responsibilities for a senior FEA engineer?

A Senior FEA Engineer typically spends their workdays creating and validating finite element models, analyzing simulation results, and preparing detailed technical reports for project teams and stakeholders. You may collaborate closely with design engineers, project managers, and manufacturing teams to propose optimization solutions or address engineering challenges. Reviewing and mentoring the work of junior engineers and staying current with advancements in simulation tools are also common responsibilities. This role is highly collaborative, with frequent opportunities to influence product design decisions and ensure the structural integrity and performance of engineering solutions.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the senior FEA engineer position, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Senior FEA Engineer, you need advanced knowledge of finite element analysis principles, mechanical engineering concepts, and typically a bachelor's or master's degree in engineering. Expertise with FEA software such as ANSYS, Abaqus, or NASTRAN, along with proficiency in CAD tools and relevant industry certifications, is highly valued. Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and the ability to communicate complex findings to multidisciplinary teams are crucial soft skills. These abilities ensure accurate simulations, effective collaboration, and innovative solutions in product design and structural analysis projects.

Position Summary

The Senior Technical Applications Engineer serves as the senior technical owner for HLS customer applications, system specification, standards compliance, external engineering coordination, and lifecycle technical support.

This role bridges Sales, customers, and external engineers—owning application definition, technical scoping, and engineering coordination—while helping establish the foundational processes, standards, and documentation needed to evolve toward in-house engineering over time.

The role blends technical support, application engineering, and technical oversight to ensure safe, compliant, and high-performance below-the-hook lifting solutions across North America, Europe, and Asia. Success is measured by proposal accuracy, technical quality, reduced engineering risk, and enabling successful customer delivery.

Following engineering release, responsibility for project execution transfers to the Senior Field Service Engineer while the Senior Technical Applications Engineer remains the technical lead for engineering support and technical escalations.

Primary Responsibilities

Technical & Applications Engineering

•    Own the technical system definition, standards, and lifecycle framework for HLS.

•    Validate technical application information gathered by Sales, identify missing requirements or risks, and confirm system feasibility and technical scope before engineering begins.

•    Provide preliminary system sizing, application feasibility assessments, and configuration recommendations.

•    Support customer meetings, technical discussions, and proposal development as the primary HLS technical resource.

•    Interface with external vendors on product design, change requests, and compliance.

•    Translate customer and sales requirements into structured engineering scopes for outsourced engineering partners.

•    Support development of technical proposals, customer presentations, and system demonstrations for complex opportunities.

•    Support Sales with technical validation, risk assessment, and solution alignment.

Standards, Compliance & Technical Governance

•    Serve as the internal technical authority for applicable HLS standards and ensure ASME BTH-1, ASME B30.20, OSHA requirements, and Magswitch design standards are incorporated into specifications, engineering scopes, design reviews, and customer documentation for systems sold into North America.

•    Translate those requirements into standard specifications and engineering scopes.

•    Ensure overseas engineering/manufacturing partners design and build to those requirements.

•    Maintain standard design-review checklists, compliance documentation, and technical templates.

Structural & Mechanical Technical Oversight

•    Serve as the primary technical interface with external engineering and fabrication partners for system configuration, structural calculations, and detailed engineering design.

•    Review and provide internal technical approval of below-the-hook engineering drawings, calculations, and submittals, coordinating licensed PE review and stamping where required.

•    Coordinate engineering schedules and technical deliverables to support customer proposal and project timelines.

•    Verify magnet selection, load paths, attachment design, safety factors, and review FEA when provided.

•    Maintain models, documentation, and project status updates.

Internal Coordination & Capability Development

•    Coordinate with overseas engineering and manufacturing partners to ensure customer requirements and applicable market standards are carried from specification through design, manufacture, and final technical release.

•    Build and maintain product records and BOMs within the ERP system.

•    Deliver complete engineering packages to the Senior Field Service Engineer, including drawings, specifications, BOMs, and lift plans.

•    Support service technicians and installation partners during commissioning or technical escalations (primarily remote).

•    Coordinate across global time zones with suppliers, engineering partners, and internal teams.

•    Lead internal design reviews and lessons-learned discussions.

•    Begin developing internal engineering templates, documentation, and standards as a foundational OEM capability.

•    Own the technical accuracy of customer quotations.

•    Develop system configurations and bills of material supporting commercial quotations.

•    Validate technical scope before commercial proposal release.

•    Support cost estimation with Operations and Supply Chain.

Minimum Qualifications

•    B.S. in Mechanical Engineering, Structural Engineering, or related technical field (required).

•    Minimum of seven years of experience in engineered-to-order equipment, lifting devices, cranes, rigging, automation, or heavy industrial machinery.

•    Strong understanding of mechanical and structural principles, load calculations, and safety factors.

•    Experience interpreting and applying industry standards and regulatory requirements, preferably including ASME BTH-1, ASME B30.20, OSHA, or similar industrial safety standards.

•    Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

•    Comfortable working across sales, engineering, project management, and field environments.

•    Ability to review CAD drawings, interpret FEA, and manage engineering documentation.

•    Ability to support global partners and customers across multiple time zones.

•    Occasional international travel as required.

Preferred Qualifications

•    Experience with below-the-hook devices or crane systems preferred.

•    Knowledge of magnets or lifting systems.

•    Understanding and design of IoT systems.

•    Willingness to obtain PE licensure where appropriate and to establish and manage a network of licensed Professional Engineers authorized to review and stamp documents in accordance with applicable state requirements.
