Job description

The Role:

SoFi is launching a brand-new commercial banking product - and we need a Senior Engineering Manager to build and lead it.

Commercial Banking is SoFi's entry into institutional commercial banking. We're building the infrastructure that lets large institutional clients in crypto, fintech, and enterprise finance manage their money at SoFi - real-time payments, multi-account treasury management, and a closed-loop settlement network that operates 24/7/365. The product you build will handle real institutional money from day one. The network you help create - SEN (SoFi Exchange Network) - could become the default settlement rail for the industry.

This is a rare chance to build a new business line for a publicly traded bank, backed by SoFi's banking charter, existing payment infrastructure, and a company that moves fast. You'll shape the technical foundation, hire the team, and ship the product.

What You'll Do:

Build It

  • Lead the architecture and delivery of SoFi's commercial banking product - API Gateway, payment orchestration, client onboarding, and the services that power the client-facing experience.
  • Own the end-to-end client onboarding orchestrator: a stateful workflow engine that provisions entities, bank accounts, entitlements, payment rails, limits, and pricing - across sandbox and production environments.
  • Drive the design and implementation of the SoFi Exchange Network (SEN) - a real-time, 24/7/365 closed-loop payment network enabling instant settlement between SoFi commercial clients.
  • Build enterprise-grade identity, RBAC, and maker/checker approval systems that support complex organizational structures (CFOs, treasury managers, analysts, auditors - each with scoped account access, per-rail permissions, and configurable payment limits).
  • Deliver a production-quality sandbox environment that allows institutional clients to integrate and test against realistic simulations of every payment rail.
Lead the Team
  • Recruit, mentor, and grow a high-performing engineering team.
  • Set technical direction and engineering standards - code quality, system design, observability, incident response.
  • Drive execution with well-defined sprints, clear deliverables, and tight feedback loops.
  • Create a culture of ownership where engineers think beyond their pull requests - understanding the business impact of every payment that flows through the system.
Drive Cross-Functional Delivery
  • Partner directly with Product, Design, Compliance (AML/KYB), Risk, Treasury, and Bank Operations to deliver a product that meets both client needs and regulatory requirements.
  • Coordinate across engineering teams at SoFi to integrate Commercial Banking into SoFi's broader banking infrastructure - identity, entitlements, accounts, payments, and core banking systems.
  • Influence and shape the end-to-end client experience, working closely with partners across the product and design organizations.
  • Own the technical relationship with early clients during onboarding, sandbox integration, and production go-live. You'll be in the room when the first wire clears.
  • Define and execute the go-live readiness process: functional validation, security review, ops runbook, monitoring, and formal sign-off across Engineering, Operations, and the client.
Scale It
  • Design systems that scale from early clients at launch to hundreds - with the onboarding orchestrator, payment processing, and operational tooling to support that growth.
  • Establish the operational workflows that SoFi Ops will use to manage Commercial Banking clients at scale (account views, payment rail dashboards, error resolution, compliance and regulatory workflows).
  • Build the billing and revenue infrastructure, including monthly reporting and reconciliation.
What You'll Need:
  • 10+ years of software engineering experience, with at least 4 years in engineering management leading teams of software engineers.
  • Strong distributed systems skills - you can design services, define API contracts, and reason about consistency, idempotency, and failure modes in complex workflows.
  • Strong technical expertise - you can evaluate architecture proposals, engage in design reviews, and hold the team to a high engineering bar. Familiarity with JVM-based stacks (Kotlin or Java, Spring Boot) and modern infrastructure (Kubernetes, AWS/GCP, CI/CD) is a plus.
  • Track record of zero-to-one product delivery - you've shipped a new product from concept to production with real users.
  • Experience with enterprise identity and access management - RBAC, OAuth2, multi-tenant authorization, and approval workflows.
  • Strong cross-functional leadership - you can drive alignment across Product, Design, Compliance, Risk, and Operations without needing a VP to clear the path.
  • Excellent communication skills - you'll present to executives, write technical design documents, and explain system tradeoffs to non-technical stakeholders.
Nice to Have:
  • Experience building financial systems - payments, ledger, treasury, banking, or fintech where correctness, auditability, and reliability are non-negotiable.
  • Experience building real-time payment systems (FedWire, FedNow, RTP, ACH origination) or settlement networks.
  • Background in commercial or institutional banking (treasury management, FBO/omnibus accounts, correspondent banking).
  • Experience with crypto-adjacent financial infrastructure - custodian banking, exchange settlement, stablecoin operations.
  • Familiarity with AML/KYB compliance workflows, sanctions screening (OFAC), and transaction monitoring in a regulated banking environment.
  • Experience building developer-facing products - API gateways, developer portals, sandbox environments, webhook infrastructure.

Prior work with workflow orchestration engines (Temporal, Cadence, Step Functions) for long-running stateful processes.
