What are Senior Data Engineers?

Senior Data Engineers are experienced professionals who design, build, and maintain large-scale data processing systems and infrastructure. They are responsible for developing data pipelines, managing databases, and ensuring the efficient flow and integrity of data across various platforms. Senior Data Engineers often collaborate with data scientists, analysts, and other engineers to support business intelligence and machine learning projects. They also play a key role in implementing best practices for data security, quality, and governance within an organization.

What is the difference between Senior Data Engineer vs Data Scientist?

AspectSenior Data EngineerData Scientist
Required CredentialsBachelor's/Master's in CS, Engineering, or related; experience with data pipelinesBachelor's/Master's in CS, Statistics, or related; proficiency in statistical analysis and modeling
Work EnvironmentBuild and maintain data infrastructure, optimize data workflowsAnalyze data, develop predictive models, generate insights
Employer & Industry UsageTech companies, finance, healthcare, where data engineering is essentialResearch, marketing, tech firms focusing on data analysis and modeling

While both roles work with data, Senior Data Engineers focus on developing and maintaining data infrastructure, whereas Data Scientists analyze data to generate insights and build models. They often collaborate but have distinct skill sets and responsibilities.

What are some common challenges Senior Data Engineers face when integrating data from multiple sources?

Senior Data Engineers often encounter challenges such as inconsistent data formats, varying data quality, and differing update frequencies when integrating data from multiple sources. Addressing these issues requires designing robust ETL (Extract, Transform, Load) pipelines, implementing data validation checks, and collaborating closely with source system owners to ensure data integrity. Effective communication with cross-functional teams and leveraging scalable data integration tools are also essential to streamline the process and minimize errors.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Senior Data Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Senior Data Engineer, you need strong expertise in data modeling, ETL development, programming (such as Python or Scala), and a degree in computer science or a related field. Proficiency with big data technologies (like Hadoop, Spark), cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, GCP), and database systems, as well as relevant certifications, is highly valuable. Excellent problem-solving, communication, and leadership skills help you collaborate across teams and mentor junior engineers. These skills and qualities ensure robust, scalable data solutions that support organizational decision-making and growth.

ABOUT THE ROLE
Join the Analytics Engineering and Visualization Hub, a centralized team within Finance Digital Transformation, whose mission is to build trusted data products-including semantic models, dashboards, and other tools-that empower Finance and the broader organization to make faster, smarter decisions. By standardizing data and visual design, we enable scalable analytics, data literacy, and the foundation for AI-driven solutions. As a Fabric Data Engineer, you will design, build, and maintain robust data pipelines and semantic models that serve as the foundation for scalable self-service analytics. This role is ideal for someone who thrives at the intersection of data engineering and analytics, with a passion for shaping raw data into clean, governed, and reusable assets that empower decision-making. You will work in Microsoft Fabric and other modern data platforms to deliver high-quality data products that power Finance analytics, reporting directly to the Senior Director of the Analytics Engineering and Visualization Hub.
WHAT YOU'LL DO
  • Design, build, and maintain robust data pipelines and semantic models using Microsoft Fabric and modern data platforms
  • Ingest and integrate data from diverse sources utilizing Fabric tools such as shortcuts, pipelines, and dataflows Gen2
  • Transform and enrich data through Fabric dataflows Gen2, stored procedures, and notebooks
  • Design and maintain lakehouses and data warehouses to support scalable analytics
  • Build and manage enterprise-grade semantic models with reusable metrics and robust access controls
  • Implement and enforce data governance, quality, and documentation standards
  • Optimize performance and reliability of data pipelines and models
  • Partner with Finance stakeholders, enterprise data engineers, and AEV Hub analysts to deliver accurate, relevant, and actionable insights
  • Contribute to self-service analytics enablement through training and support for end users
  • Collaborate using Git-based workflows (GitHub) and support CI/CD practices for data products
  • Support the development and deployment of Power BI semantic models and dashboards
  • Ensure compliance with data security, access controls, and documentation best practices
WHAT YOU BRING
  • Bachelor's degree in Finance, Computer Science, Data Analytics, or related technical field
  • 3+ years of experience in data engineering, analytics engineering, or business intelligence
  • Proficiency in SQL and experience with data transformation tools (Power Query, PySpark, T-SQL)
  • Experience with Microsoft Fabric, Azure Synapse, Azure Databricks, or similar cloud data platforms
  • Experience designing and maintaining lakehouses and data warehouses
  • Experience building and managing enterprise-grade semantic models
  • Strong understanding of data modeling principles and semantic layer design
  • Experience with Git-based workflows (GitHub) and CI/CD for data products
  • Power BI or Microsoft Fabric certification (PL-300, DP-600) preferred
  • Experience with Microsoft Fabric components: lakehouses, dataflows, pipelines, notebooks, semantic models
  • Experience building Power BI semantic models and dashboards
  • Familiarity with Power BI service (workspaces, deployment, RLS, dataflows)
  • Experience working in Finance or with financial data (SAP) is a plus
  • Strong collaboration and communication skills
  • Must be authorized to work in the U.S. (no visa sponsorship)
