Position Summary
The Data Engineer is responsible for designing, building, deploying, and supporting cloud-native data platforms, integrations, and data pipelines that enable secure and reliable data exchange between internal applications, external business partners, operational systems, and analytics platforms.
This role serves as a key technical resource supporting Application Engineers, business stakeholders, and external trading partners by ensuring data is accessible, trusted, secure, and available where and when it is needed. The Data Engineer works closely with software development teams to deliver scalable data services, integration frameworks, and operational data solutions within Microsoft Azure.
The ideal candidate combines strong technical expertise in data integration and cloud technologies with a practical understanding of business processes, application architecture, and healthcare data exchange.
Responsibilities
  • Design, develop, deploy, and support cloud-native data solutions within Microsoft Azure.
  • Build and maintain scalable data ingestion, transformation, and orchestration pipelines using Azure services and modern integration patterns.
  • Develop and support integrations between internal applications, third-party vendors, clients, healthcare partners, and other external data trading partners.
  • Design and implement APIs, file exchange processes, and system-to-system integrations that support business operations and application development.
  • Collaborate closely with Application Engineers to design data access patterns, integration architectures, and reusable data services.
  • Create and maintain operational data models that support application functionality and business processes.
  • Build and support Azure-based storage platforms, databases, and data services that enable application and analytics workloads.
  • Develop secure processes for exchanging data through APIs, flat files, SFTP, EDI transactions, healthcare interoperability standards, and other integration mechanisms as required.
  • Support real-time and near real-time data processing requirements where business needs warrant.
  • Design and implement monitoring, alerting, logging, and recovery processes for data pipelines and integrations.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve data quality, integration, performance, and reliability issues across development, test, and production environments.
  • Develop automation solutions that improve reliability, consistency, and operational efficiency.
  • Maintain documentation for integrations, data flows, APIs, pipelines, and supporting technologies.
  • Participate in architecture discussions and contribute recommendations related to scalability, reliability, performance, interoperability, and security.
  • Utilize source control, CI/CD pipelines, and DevOps practices to support reliable deployment and maintenance of data solutions.
  • Ensure compliance with company security standards and regulatory requirements related to healthcare and sensitive information.
  • Support AI, machine learning, and advanced analytics initiatives through the delivery of trusted and accessible data assets.
  • Stay current with Microsoft Azure services, modern data engineering practices, and emerging technologies.

Requirements
Qualifications
Required
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Data Engineering, Software Engineering, or a related field preferred, or equivalent professional experience.
  • Minimum of five years of professional experience in data engineering, data integration, application development, or a related technical discipline.
  • Strong experience with Microsoft SQL Server and advanced SQL development.
  • Experience building and supporting ETL/ELT processes and large-scale data integrations.
  • Experience designing and implementing cloud-based solutions within Microsoft Azure.
  • Experience with Azure Data Factory, Azure SQL, Storage Accounts, Azure Functions, Logic Apps, or similar Azure services.
  • Experience developing and consuming RESTful APIs and modern integration technologies.
  • Strong understanding of relational database design, data integration patterns, and data lifecycle management.
  • Experience working with source control and DevOps platforms such as Azure DevOps and Git.
  • Ability to troubleshoot complex technical issues involving data movement, integrations, and system interoperability.
  • Strong analytical thinking, problem-solving skills, and attention to detail.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills with both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a team environment.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with Microsoft Fabric, Azure Synapse Analytics, Databricks, or similar cloud data platforms.
  • Experience supporting healthcare, pharmacy benefit management, claims processing, or highly regulated industries.
  • Familiarity with HIPAA, PHI, PII, and healthcare data security requirements.
  • Experience working with healthcare interoperability standards such as FHIR, HL7, NCPDP, or EDI transactions.
  • Experience with Python, PowerShell, C#, or other scripting and automation technologies.
  • Experience with event-driven architectures, messaging platforms, and asynchronous integration patterns.
  • Familiarity with Azure Service Bus, Event Grid, Event Hubs, or related technologies.
  • Experience supporting machine learning, AI, or advanced analytics initiatives.
  • Experience with AI-assisted development tools such as GitHub Copilot, Claude Code, Devin, or Windsurf.
  • Experience operating within Agile or iterative software delivery environments.
