What is a senior copywriter contract?

A Senior Copywriter Contract typically refers to a temporary or project-based agreement in which an experienced copywriter is hired to create compelling written content for an organization. Senior copywriters are responsible for crafting high-quality copy for ads, websites, emails, and other marketing materials, often leading projects and mentoring junior writers. These contracts can range in length and scope, and may be full-time or part-time, depending on the needs of the employer. Contract roles offer flexibility for both the company and the writer, while still demanding a high level of skill and professionalism.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a senior copywriter contract?

To thrive as a Senior Copywriter (Contract), you need advanced writing, editing, and conceptual skills, usually supported by a degree in communications, marketing, or a related field and a strong portfolio. Familiarity with content management systems (CMS), SEO tools, and project management platforms is typically required. Creativity, adaptability, and effective collaboration are standout soft skills in this role. These abilities ensure that copy aligns with brand voice, engages audiences, and meets business objectives in fast-paced, deadline-driven environments.

What are some common challenges faced by senior copywriters working on a contract basis, and how can they be addressed?

As a Senior Copywriter on contract, one common challenge is quickly adapting to a new brand voice and guidelines while meeting tight deadlines. Contract roles often require you to jump into projects mid-stream and collaborate with diverse teams, which can make communication and alignment more complex. To address these challenges, proactively request comprehensive briefs, schedule onboarding meetings with key stakeholders, and clarify expectations early on. Building strong relationships with project managers and designers also ensures smoother collaboration and successful project delivery.

Job description

Skylight is a technology startup building the OS of the family. We make Skylight Calendar, the smart calendar loved by millions of families (plus Wired and the Wirecutter). Our latest product is Calendar 2, which just launched to rave reviews.
Our mission is to connect loved ones by creating the world's simplest products and services that improve family life. Our founders are former venture capitalists and serial entrepreneurs who have scaled this business to $300M+ in annual revenue while being completely bootstrapped and profitable. We get to grow a happy, healthy company focused on making products our customers love without investors breathing down our necks.
We're seeking a senior-level contract copywriter to help us during our Q4 season. This role will support senior staff in creating important growth creative work, with a focus on e-mail and paid social. The ideal candidate is a self-starter that is organized and agile, with a strong background in performance creative - and has a portfolio to demonstrate those skills.
A portfolio of work is required for consideration for this role.
Responsibilities:
  • Working with senior staff, including Principal Copywriter and Senior Graphic Designers to autonomously execute e-mail and paid social creative, as well as other ad-hoc channels where marketing needs require it.
  • Collaborating with channel partners to test and iterate on ideas quickly, leveraging data and insights to inform creative decision-making.
  • Adhering to Skylight's style guide and tone of voice to create marketing materials that adhere to brand identity.

Requirements
  • Bachelor's degree and 5+ years of experience
  • Experience in Figma, or similar design systems
  • Background in writing for e-mail and paid social creative, with a portfolio to demonstrate those skills
  • Strong organizational and communication skills
  • Highly collaborative, a self-starter, and low ego

Nice to Have:
  • Experience with online retail marketing
  • Experience writing copy that serves our demographic: parents of younger children
  • Experience working on paid social in a high-growth company or agency environment

Benefits
  • Hours: 20 hours with up to 40 hours through the end of Q4.
  • Pay: $50-$70/hr
