Job description

Job Title: Controller

Location: 3 days per week in Austinโ€™s Mueller District and 2 days per week at the company headquarters in Southeast Texas.

Compensation: Competitive base + annual bonus + profit sharing, paid quarterly

A fast-growing Texas business is building its own accounting function for the first time. Every process in this finance function gets designed by whoever takes this job: how the month closes, what the controls are, which systems carry the volume. The business behind it is profitable, cash-strong, and ready to stop sending its accounting out of house.

Your boss is the President, a CPA who has done this work before, is covering pieces of it himself right now, and is happy to bring you up to speed on whatever you haven't seen before. The accounting is high-volume and fairly standard. Inventory carries at average cost, and a hedging layer protects that position against price moves rather than trading on it. The hedge carries its own accounting guidance, and that's the one corner you may not have seen before. It's learnable, and the President has done it. Growth outpaced the systems, which is why most of what should exist here hasn't been built yet.

Why This Will Excite You

  • Accounting and compliance both report to you: You'd own the function end to end, help drive the ERP rebuild alongside the product and technology team, and be in the room for leadership decisions.
  • One decision-maker: Finance decisions run through the President, not a committee, and he moves quickly.
  • No investor clock: The owners have run companies for more than a century with no outside capital and no debt against the operating companies. Your mandate won't get rewritten because a new investor showed up.
  • Profit share with a payout history: The profit share tracks group results, and the most recent quarter paid out in full.

The Goal

Twelve months in, the close lands on a five-day calendar leadership can count on, the bank reconciliation runs itself, the core processes are standardized and written down, and the new ERP is live with the accounting running on it.

Outcomes You'll Be Responsible For

  • Get the close under control: stand up a calendared five-day month-end close and the AP/AR and cash-cycle processes behind it. Automate the bank reconciliation and pull manual journal entries down to a sane number.
  • Rebuild the ERP: the platform is Odoo and most of it sits idle. You'd help drive the re-architecture so client and vendor accounts, warehouse management, and automation actually run, and work with the product and technology team so custom software is accounting-sound before it ships.
  • Write the rules: documented standards, sound practice, clean audit-readiness with the outside auditor. Part of the job is telling people why something shouldn't be done, and you'd have the standing to say it.
  • Sort out the team: form your own read on the bench, get people into the right seats, and build up a group that has never had an accounting leader to learn from. The harder calls come with the President's backing, and there's room to hire underneath.

Skills Needed to Apply

  • An accounting degree, and command of GAAP strong enough to catch what is wrong and explain why it is wrong
  • Hands-on ownership of a month-end close, accounts payable and receivable, and the cash cycle. Controller and accounting manager titles both count, and candidates running the close without the Controller title should apply.
  • Operational accounting in a high-transaction, inventory-heavy business: commodity manufacturing, steel, packaging, beverage, warehousing, high-volume third-party logistics, or distribution
  • Average costing is the closest match, though another costing method that maps onto this environment works
  • Experience managing and coaching accountants, including developing people who needed it and making the harder personnel calls
  • ERP implementation or migration experience, or an appetite for it having seen one done well
  • A track record of replacing manual processes with documented standards and automation that changed how a business ran

Nice to have:

  • Active CPA, CPA in progress, or a lapsed CPA whose technical command is still current
  • Comfortable in front of senior leadership and outside visitors, and working across trading, technology, and operations

Qualities

  • Urgency: Some deadlines here don't move. The team runs on people who treat them that way.
  • Hands-on and curious: You'd be in the detail and asking why a process looks the way it does. People who've owned the work themselves do best here.
  • Low drama: Close quarters, no politics to navigate, trust that comes from competence.
  • Presence: You'd be in executive meetings and around serious outside visitors, so how you carry yourself matters.
  • At home in a traditional shop: Business casual, conservative, family-oriented. The facility is secure, so building access runs from about 7:30 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. on the days you're on site.
