Position Purpose

The Assistant Controller supports the company’s accounting operations, ensuring accurate financial and management reporting, strong internal controls, and compliance with accounting standards and taxing authorities.

This role supports the company’s succession planning strategy as a developmental position, offering progressive responsibility and development for advancement to Controller, including exposure to financial leadership, reporting oversight, and strategic initiatives.

Position Responsibilities

Accounting Operations and Internal Controls

  • Oversee accounting functions of the company including billings, accounts receivable, accounts payable, payroll, revenue recognition, job costing, cost allocations, and general ledger.
  • Provide backup support for the department’s pod leaders and Controller and assume increasing ownership of accounting operations.
  • Maintain the company’s internal accounting controls and segregation of duties.
  • Contribute to the department’s continuous improvement initiatives.

Financial and Management Reporting

  • Contribute to accurate period-end reconciliations and financial reporting for the company.
  • Provide support for the completion of the company’s annual financial audit.
  • Prepare accurate financial statements for related-party entities.
  • Provide analysis, data, and reports to management, internal customers, and external business partners to support value-added solutions.
  • Contribute to the preparation of financial budgets.
  • Partner with the Controller to progressively assume greater responsibility in financial reporting, analysis, and budgeting activities. 

Compliance and Risk Management

  • Ensure compliance with GAAP, company policies, and regulatory requirements.
  • Contribute to the calculation of estimated income tax payments and the filing of annual income tax returns, including tax depreciation and other contributors to the M-1 schedule. 
  • Stay current with applicable tax regulations and incentives.
  • Provide support for tax audits, if applicable.
  • Submit covenant reporting requirements for company borrowings, if applicable.
  • Complete property and casualty insurance renewal requirements.
  • Partner with the Controller to progressively assume greater responsibility in financial reporting, tax compliance, and property and casualty insurance audits.

Management, Leadership, and Other

  • Supervise and coach direct reports, incorporating one-on-one meetings, goal setting, development, and evaluation.
  • Establish and follow through on a personal, professional development plan.
  • Participate in Bassett Management Team (BMT) meetings, trainings, and activities.
  • Participate in cross-functional initiatives to build readiness for advancement.
  • Support and maintain a safe and lean working environment.
  • Perform responsibilities within the quality management system and ISO standards.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Summary of Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting required.
  • CPA, CMA, and/or CCIFP certification preferred.
  • At least seven years in construction accounting and/or public accounting.
  • Working knowledge of GAAP and internal accounting controls.
  • Knowledge of tax regulations, including sales and use (construction industry preferred), income, property, and payroll taxes. 
  • Ability to perform a highly detailed analysis with independence to ensure accurate accounting and/or value-added solutions.
  • Ability and desire to progress into a Controller-level role, including strong analytical, leadership, and strategic thinking skills.
  • Software skills to include proficiency in Microsoft Excel, Word, and Outlook and experience with accounting, financial reporting, and fixed asset applications.
  • Ability to handle confidential company information with integrity.
  • Strong attention to detail and organization skills.
  • Highly effective in a team-oriented environment.
  • Excellent communication (verbal and written) and customer service skills.
