Job description

Electric Boat is overseeing the construction of the Integrated Propulsion System (IPS) Motor Module for future COLUMBIA Class Submarines which will be performed at a vendor site in Philadelphia, PA. Electric Boat is also overseeing the execution of test programs for IPS components which is performed at the Compatibility Test Facility (CTF) in Philadelphia, PA. D489 CLB Propulsion Engineering is seeking experienced candidates to support construction of Motor Modules and periodic support of test programs of production and pre-production IPS components in the Philadelphia Navy Yard.

The selected candidate will provide design and deck plate support for main propulsion system (MPS) equipment (e.g., main propulsion controls and ACC subcomponent, main propulsion motor drives, and main propulsion switchboards) during follow-on motor module construction. The candidate will also provide deck plate support of MPS pre-production equipment and MPS components during follow-on motor module test programs (MMTPs) and inter module test programs on an as needed basis.

The position will be a permanent role onsite in Philadelphia, PA reporting to the historic Philadelphia Navy Yard located 4 miles from Center City. The candidate is expected to complete a 3 to 6 mo. training rotation in New London, CT with the respective component group(s) prior to permanent transfer down to Philadelphia, PA. Internal transfers (New London/Groton/Quonset Point) will be offered a relocation package which includes a moving package and a 15% site differential bonus applied to the hire’s base salary at the completion of their training rotation. The position is expected to support 16/5 up to 24/7 construction and testing as required with 2nd / 3rd shift differentials applied per policy when assigned. This position also receives straight time compensation for additional hours worked in accordance with policy.

This role will primarily be a 1st shift position.

The selected candidate will be required to collaborate with IPS cognizant component groups to troubleshoot more complicated issues as they arise.

Additional responsibilities include:

  1. Determine the root cause of any IPS cognizant issues encountered and expeditiously correct any deficiencies to minimize interruptions to construction
  2. Perform surveillances of work being performed under area of cognizance
  3. Act as a primary Electric Boat contact for on-site IPS component suppliers
  4. Support development of IPS cognizant component group engineering directions
  5. Support other locations with issue resolution of COLUMBIA specific equipment
  6. Support construction activities and shipboard integration at Electric Boat manufacturing facilities
  7. Gather data / information to support development of COLUMBIA IPS design and documentation improvements
  8. Interface with technical and management personnel at NAVSEA, NNL, NSWC, and vendors
  9. Support IPS test programs as applicable
  10. Mentor to entry level engineers
  11. Work as a component shift lead
  12. Advisor to management (Specialist)

Required:

  • Bachelor of Science in engineering or related technical field is required (e.g. Electrical, Systems, Mechanical, Marine, Mechatronics, Physics, Mathematics, etc.)
  • 5 – 14 years of post-graduate engineering experience is required

Preferred:

  • Masters of Science or Engineering degree with technical background (e.g. Electrical, Systems, Mechanical, Marine, Mechatronics, Physics, Mathematics, etc.) is preferred
  • 1 - 14 year(s) of COLUMBIA or VA engineering experience (design of a ship component or similar program, including the preparation, review and approval of technical work documents, or test procedures) is preferred
  • Knowledge of the COLUMBIA IPS component and system designs as well as the CTF requirements and capabilities is preferred
  • Prior experience supporting COLUMBIA IPS component work of either Main Propulsion Drives (MPDs), Main Propulsion Controllers (MPCs), Main Propulsion Switchboards (MP SWBDs) or ACCs is preferred
  • Experience working with NAVSEA/NNL
  • Multi-disciplinary systems engineering experience in complex systems based products
  • Experience with MIL Standards
  • Experience in control systems, power electronics, variable speed motor drives, software configuration management, fluid systems engineering, or thermal analysis
  • Experience supporting deck plate work evolutions and interfacing with Operations and Test

  • Experience using Microsoft products
  • Experience working in a high stress, high tempo environment
  • Experience working long hours
