Senior Building Engineer information

What is a senior building engineer?

Senior Building Engineers are experienced professionals responsible for overseeing the operation, maintenance, and repair of building systems, such as HVAC, electrical, plumbing, and structural components. They often supervise other engineers or technicians and ensure that all building systems are functioning efficiently and safely. In addition to troubleshooting complex issues, they may also manage projects, coordinate with contractors, and ensure compliance with safety regulations and building codes. Senior Building Engineers typically work in commercial, industrial, or institutional settings and play a crucial role in facility management.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a senior building engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Senior Building Engineer, you need in-depth knowledge of building systems (HVAC, electrical, plumbing), strong problem-solving skills, and typically a degree in engineering or a related field, along with relevant licensure or certifications. Familiarity with building automation systems, maintenance management software, and compliance with safety regulations is crucial. Leadership, effective communication, and the ability to manage teams and vendors set outstanding professionals apart. These skills and qualities ensure safe, efficient building operations, regulatory compliance, and cost-effective facility management.

What are some common challenges faced by senior building engineers, and how can they effectively address them?

Senior Building Engineers often face challenges such as managing complex building systems, coordinating maintenance schedules, and ensuring compliance with evolving safety and environmental regulations. To address these challenges, it's important to stay updated with the latest building codes, leverage building management technologies, and foster strong communication with team members and external vendors. Proactive problem-solving and regular training can also help in maintaining operational efficiency and minimizing unexpected equipment failures.

Job description

Mechanical  Engineer, Building Science - Richmond Hill

  • Building Science- Existing buildings Retrofit & Capital Projects
  • P.Eng. designation in Ontario, or actively working toward it
  • Richmond Hill (relocating to Markham) | GTA-based projects
  • Salary Range: $100,000 - $125,000, depending on experience
  • Performance bonus - Benefits package

If you’re a Mechanical Engineer working in consulting and you’re ready to step into a role where you’re trusted to lead projects, work directly with clients, and grow into a leadership position, this opportunity is for you.

This is an opportunity to take on true project ownership; working directly with clients, leading building system upgrades, and playing a visible role in delivering high-impact retrofit and capital projects.

You’ll be involved from assessment and planning through to execution, with a clear path toward senior leadership as the team continues to grow.

Why Apply?

  • Help build the mechanical practice.
  • Work directly with a senior consultant during transition.
  • Become the future mechanical lead.
  • Opportunity to grow a department.

Brown & Beattie Ltd. is looking for a Mechanical Engineer with 7-10 years of experience in building systems who is ready to take on a high responsibility ownership, client-facing role focused on existing buildings, retrofits, and capital planning projects. If you do not currently hold a P.Eng. designation in Ontario, or are not located within commuting distance of the GTA, this role will not be the right fit.

What You’ll Be Doing

As a Mechanical Engineer, you will be responsible for assessment of existing building mechanical systems as well as design of replacement systems such as boilers, chillers, cooling towers, make-up air units and others. A working knowledge of building electrical systems as they pertain to mechanical systems and building mechanical equipment upgrades is a must.

Duties will include drafting specifications, construction review, progress reports, and client liaison. In this role you’ll manage a portfolio of projects with strong support and clear ownership. You will also be working directly with clients, contractors, and internal team members, so strong communication and organization skills are important. There will be opportunities to support and mentor junior staff as the team grows.

What Sets This Role Apart

This role offers a strong level of independence and ownership. You will be trusted to manage your own projects while working within a supportive and experienced team. There is a clear path to increased responsibility over time, including the opportunity to take on a leadership role within the mechanical discipline.  The work is varied and practical, with a mix of office-based tasks, site visits, and client interaction.

Who This Role Is For

This role is best suited for a Mechanical Engineer with experience in building systems, particularly in retrofit, restoration, or consulting environments. You may currently be working at a consulting firm and looking for a role that offers more ownership, more direct client interaction, and long-term growth. You are comfortable working independently, managing multiple priorities, and taking accountability for your work.

Qualifications and Experience

  • P.Eng. designation in Ontario, or actively working towards
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering
  • Approximately 6+ years of relevant experience
  • Strong knowledge of building mechanical systems including HVAC, boilers, chillers, and ventilation
  • Experience with residential high-rise or similar building types is preferred
  • Working knowledge of electrical systems as they relate to mechanical upgrades is an asset
  • Familiarity with Ontario Building Code and ASHRAE standards
  • Experience with AutoCAD and/or Revit
  • Background in building science, including BSS credential, is an asset but not required

Work Environment and Requirements

  • Based in Richmond Hill, with a planned move to Markham later this year
  • Projects located primarily throughout the GTA and Golden Horseshoe, with occasional travel across Ontario
  • This role requires regular physical presence in the office and at project sites across the GTA and Ontario
  • Must live within a reasonable commuting distance (approximately one hour)
  • Valid G driver’s license and access to a reliable vehicle required
  • Must be legally permitted to work in Ontario / Canada and able to provide proof if required
  • Training and onboarding will be provided to support a successful transition into the role
