Responsibilities

• Responsible to the Assistant/Associate Provost or other appropriate senior administrator for centralized leadership of university NAGPRA compliance and repatriation activities.
• Leads institutional planning, coordination, and execution of Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act compliance, with priority attention to ancestral remains, associated funerary objects, and culturally sensitive collections.
• Initiates, schedules, and leads government-to-government consultation with Tribal nations, Tribal Historic Preservation Officers, spiritual practitioners, and other designated Tribal representatives regarding repatriation, reburial, traditional care, and culturally appropriate stewardship.
• Reviews scientific, historical, archaeological, geographic, archival, and collection data to support determinations of cultural affiliation, funerary object status, collection provenance, and related federal reporting requirements.
• Oversees preparation, review, and submission of federal compliance documents, including Notices of Inventory Completion, Notices of Intent to Repatriate, summaries, inventories, and related materials in accordance with applicable statutory timelines and federal guidance.
• Coordinates with academic departments, museums, libraries, legal counsel, research administration, Native American and Indigenous Studies, state and federal agencies, and external repositories to locate, document, consolidate, and appropriately care for NAGPRA-related collections and records.
• Directs and/or facilitates as appropriate, secure records digitization, database development, archival review, physical inventory processes, collection audits, and culturally appropriate storage and handling protocols in collaboration with technical staff and Tribal representatives.
• Provides administrative and financial leadership and support for the NAGPRA compliance program, including budget planning, grant development, technical staff coordination, Tribal support logistics, reburial planning, policy development, and service on appropriate university, state, federal, or advisory committees.
• Works closely with the Native American and Indigenous Studies Center to maintain strong, high-quality relationships with the related entities described above.

Qualifications
Doctoral degree from an accredited institution, or the highest degree appropriate to the field of specialization, with a demonstrated record of achievement in research, teaching, service, administration, or professional practice related to NAGPRA compliance, repatriation, Tribal consultation, archaeology, bioarchaeology, museum studies, Native American and Indigenous studies, anthropology, history, public policy, or a closely related field.
Must demonstrate substantial knowledge of federal NAGPRA requirements, government-to-government consultation practices, culturally sensitive collections stewardship, and university administrative processes.
Preferred Qualifications
Preference may be given to candidates with experience working with Southeastern Tribal nations; knowledge of Southeastern archaeological burial sites and past cultures; experience with human remains and funerary object documentation; federal compliance publication experience; and established relationships with Tribal, federal, or museum-sector partners.
