Job description
POSITION SUMMARY
Allen Engineering and Science is seeking a motivated and experienced Cultural Resources Project Archaeologist to support and lead cultural resources projects through all phases of execution. Working under the guidance of a Principal Investigator, this position directs technical work, supports regulatory compliance, prepares archaeological documentation, and supervises field and laboratory personnel.
The Project Archaeologist contributes to successful project delivery by balancing technical requirements with project scope, schedule, and budget objectives. The ideal candidate will demonstrate strong technical expertise, project coordination skills, and a commitment to delivering high-quality cultural resources management services.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Key responsibilities include:
- Lead and oversee technical archaeological investigations under the direction of a Principal Investigator.
- Support compliance with applicable federal, state, and local cultural resources regulations, including Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act.
- Assist with coordination and communication among clients, regulatory agencies, Tribal representatives, and other project stakeholders.
- Supervise and provide technical guidance to archaeological field crews and laboratory teams.
- Prepare and review technical reports, research designs, treatment plans, monitoring reports, and other project deliverables.
- Balance technical requirements with project scope, schedule, and budget objectives.
- Manage the processing, cataloging, documentation, and curation of archaeological collections and records.
- Conduct preliminary analysis and interpretation of cultural materials and provide recommendations to the Principal Investigator.
- Maintain complete and accurate field records, datasets, and project documentation.
- Develop expertise in specialized areas such as artifact analysis, GIS, geoarchaeology, bioarchaeology, or technical reporting.
- Mentor and train early-career archaeologists and field technicians.
- Promote accountability, professionalism, collaboration, and respect across project teams.
- Support additional project and practice needs as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS
Required:
- Bachelor's degree in Anthropology, Archaeology, or a related discipline from an accredited institution.
- At least four years of professional archaeological experience.
- Experience conducting or supporting Phase I, Phase II, and Phase III cultural resources investigations.
- Experience with artifact analysis, archaeological documentation, and technical report preparation.
- Experience writing technical reports from project initiation through final submission.
- Working knowledge of Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act, NEPA, the Antiquities Code of Texas, and other applicable cultural resources regulations.
- Experience supporting permit applications and regulatory coordination.Experience using digital field-data collection systems, GPS equipment, and archaeological databases.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Excel and the management of large datasets.
- Ability to plan, organize, and coordinate archaeological field and laboratory activities.
- Strong written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills.Ability to work outdoors in varying weather and terrain conditions.
- Ability to walk, stand, bend, kneel, excavate, and perform other physical activities for extended periods.
- Ability to safely lift and carry equipment, supplies, and archaeological materials weighing up to 40 pounds.
- Willingness to work extended hours or weekends and complete overnight travel when required by project or client needs.
- Ability to travel to project sites and Allen Engineering and Science office locations as needed.
- Valid driver's license and acceptable driving record.
Preferred:
- Completion of an accredited archaeological field school.
- Experience with archaeological testing, evaluation, and data recovery projects.
- Experience conducting archival and historical research.
- Familiarity with curation standards used by agencies in the southeastern United States.
- Basic understanding of project budgets, cost estimating, and financial tracking.
- Registered Archaeologist status through the Register of Professional Archaeologists.
- Specialized experience in artifact analysis, GIS, geoarchaeology, bioarchaeology, technical reporting, or a related cultural resources discipline.
