What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Senior Backend Developer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Senior Backend Developer, you need advanced proficiency in server-side programming languages (such as Java, Python, or Node.js), deep understanding of API design, and experience with database management, often supported by a degree in computer science or related field. Familiarity with version control systems (like Git), cloud platforms (such as AWS or Azure), and relevant certifications in backend technologies are commonly required. AI is unlikely to fully replace senior backend developers, as their expertise involves designing complex systems, problem-solving, and maintaining infrastructure that requires human judgment. AI tools can automate routine tasks and assist in coding, but human oversight remains essential for architecture, security, and optimization. Backend developers will continue to adapt by integrating AI and focusing on higher-level development skills.

What are common challenges Senior Backend Developers face when leading complex projects, and how can they address them?

Senior Backend Developers often encounter challenges such as integrating legacy systems with new technologies, ensuring scalability under increased load, and coordinating cross-functional teams for seamless feature delivery. Addressing these challenges typically involves proactive architectural planning, clear communication with frontend and DevOps teams, and adopting best practices like code reviews and automated testing. Staying updated on emerging technologies and fostering a culture of knowledge sharing within the team also help in overcoming technical obstacles and driving successful project outcomes.

Job description

About Advision Development
AdVision Development is a forward-thinking technology team building innovative solutions for real-world problems. We are data-driven, user-focused, and driven by a shared mission to leverage cutting-edge technology to build robust and scalable applications. We believe in empowering our engineers to explore modern tools, move fast, and collaborate effectively.
What We Value
  • Modern Thinking: You are passionate about leveraging emerging technologies like AI and LLMs to create efficient, innovative solutions.
  • Execution-First Mindset: You know what inputs drive results and you act on them proactively.
  • Vibe Architect, Not a Vibe Coder: You don't just write code that works; you design and build systems that are scalable, maintainable, and set the standard for quality. You architect the "vibe" of our codebase.
  • Collaborative Spirit: You bring generosity and curiosity to team efforts, supporting frontend needs and making those around you better.
  • User Obsession: You constantly think from the user's POV and seek ways to better serve our audience through stable and performant backend services.
  • Problem Solving: You exhaust potential solutions before escalating, and come prepared with what you've tried.
  • Candor and Clarity: Clear, respectful communication is the norm; feedback is direct, but delivered with care.
The Role
Advision Development is looking for a Senior Backend Developer to architect and build the next generation of our services. This role is ideal for an engineer who is not only proficient in traditional backend development but is also excited by the potential of AI and LLM tools to solve complex problems and accelerate development. You will be a key player in designing and implementing robust APIs, managing databases, and ensuring the scalability and reliability of our platform, all while supporting the needs of our frontend team.
Objectives
  • Design, develop, and maintain scalable, high-performance backend systems and APIs.
  • Integrate modern AI and LLM tools into our development lifecycle to solve real-world problems and improve efficiency.
  • Architect robust backend solutions that effectively support frontend requirements and ensure seamless user experiences.

Key Responsibilities
  • Develop and maintain server-side logic using modern backend technologies (PHP, Python, Golang, Node.js).
  • Build and support RESTful APIs and other services required for frontend applications.
  • Collaborate with frontend developers to define API contracts and resolve integration issues.
  • Research, prototype, and implement solutions using AI/LLM technologies for tasks such as code generation, data analysis, and process automation.
  • Write clean, well-documented, and testable code within a production environment.
  • Mentor junior developers and contribute to establishing best practices and coding standards.

Qualifications
  • 5+ years of professional experience building and maintaining applications in a production environment.
  • Strong proficiency with at least one modern backend language (e.g., PHP, Python, Golang, Node.js).
  • Experience supporting frontend development needs with a solid understanding of JavaScript and how backend services interact with the client-side.
  • A proven track record of architecting solutions, not just implementing them.
  • Must be based in the Austin, TX area and available for occasional on-site collaboration.

Preferred Skills and Qualifications
  • Hands-on experience with AI-powered code generation tools like GitHub Copilot, Firebase Genkit, or Amazon CodeWhisperer.
  • Experience working with large language models (LLMs) via APIs.
  • Prior experience developing for or working with WordPress environments.
  • Familiarity with cloud platforms (AWS, GCP, Azure) and containerization (Docker, Kubernetes).

The pay range for this role is:
120,000 - 150,000 USD per year (5900 Balcones Drive STE100)
