What are contract backend developers?

Contract backend developers are professionals hired on a temporary or project basis to build and maintain the server-side logic, databases, and APIs that power web or mobile applications. They work behind the scenes to ensure that applications function smoothly, handle data efficiently, and communicate effectively with front-end systems. Unlike full-time employees, contract backend developers typically work for a set duration or on specific projects, offering flexibility to both clients and developers. They often bring specialized expertise in programming languages such as Python, Java, Node.js, or Ruby, and may work remotely or on-site depending on the contract terms.

Over time, the role may expand into ETL workflows, orchestration pipelines, data transformations, and cloud data platform initiatives using tools such as Airflow, DBT, and Snowflake. You will collaborate closely with engineering teams to build scalable backend systems, support data access initiatives, and contribute to evolving AI-enabled engineering workflows.
Minimum Qualifications

  • 8+ years of backend software engineering experience
  • Strong Python development experience
  • Experience building REST APIs and backend services
  • Experience with FastAPI or similar backend frameworks
  • Strong understanding of backend architecture and scalable system design
  • Experience working with secure enterprise systems and data access
  • Strong problem-solving and analytical skills
  • Ability to work independently within a small, fast-moving engineering team
  • Comfortable learning new technologies and adapting to evolving requirements

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with GraphQL, Airflow, DBT, or Snowflake
  • Experience with ETL and data transformation workflows
  • Exposure to AI/LLM engineering initiatives or MCP integrations
  • Familiarity with AI-assisted development workflows
  • Experience working in fast-paced or startup environments

Education & Experience

  • Senior-level backend engineering experience strongly preferred
