What are Senior Azure Security Engineers?

Senior Azure Security Engineers are experienced IT professionals who specialize in designing, implementing, and managing security solutions within Microsoft Azure cloud environments. They are responsible for safeguarding data, applications, and infrastructure by applying best security practices, monitoring for threats, and ensuring compliance with industry standards. These engineers often lead security assessments, respond to incidents, and work closely with development and operations teams to enforce security policies. Their expertise helps organizations protect sensitive information and maintain a secure cloud presence.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Senior Azure Security Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Senior Azure Security Engineer, you need expertise in cloud security, identity and access management, and a deep understanding of Microsoft Azure architecture, typically supported by a degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with tools like Azure Security Center, Azure Sentinel, and certifications such as Microsoft Certified: Azure Security Engineer Associate are highly valued. Outstanding problem-solving, analytical thinking, and strong collaboration skills help in proactively identifying threats and working effectively with cross-functional teams. These capabilities are crucial to ensure robust security posture, minimize risk, and protect organizational assets in complex cloud environments.

What are some common challenges faced by Senior Azure Security Engineers when managing cloud security in large organizations?

Senior Azure Security Engineers often encounter challenges such as ensuring consistent security policies across complex, multi-cloud or hybrid environments, keeping up with rapidly evolving Azure security features, and effectively responding to security incidents. Job description

Not every Azure security role actually involves building secure cloud environments from the ground up. This one does.
A compliance-driven organization operating within GCC High and Azure Government environments is looking for a Senior Azure Security Engineer who understands that โ€œsecure by designโ€ only matters if you can automate, enforce, and scale it. The work centers around architecting hardened Azure infrastructure through code, implementing policy-as-code frameworks, and navigating the realities of CMMC and FedRAMP requirements without turning engineering into paperwork theater.
Youโ€™ll own meaningful technical decisions across Azure security, governance, automation, and compliance while partnering with senior infrastructure and security leadership in a highly visible environment. If youโ€™ve taken a GCC High environment from whiteboard to production and know the difference between compliance claims and operational security, this role will feel familiarโ€”in the best way.

Required Skills & Experience

  • Hands-on experience delivering at least one complete GCC High or Azure Government implementation from design through production deployment
  • Strong expertise with Azure security tooling including Defender, SIEM integrations, Azure Policy, and PowerShell-driven infrastructure automation
  • Experience building and maintaining cloud environments aligned to CMMC, FedRAMP, or comparable federal compliance frameworks

Desired Skills & Experience

  • Experience implementing policy-as-code and reusable governance controls using Terraform and/or Bicep
  • Background supporting CMMC C3PAO assessments or FedRAMP authorization efforts
  • Experience securing Azure Virtual Desktop (AVD), SharePoint, and enterprise collaboration environments within regulated ecosystems

Daily Responsibilities

  • Hands-On Engineering: 75%
  • Team Collaboration & Cross-Functional Work: 25%

Applicants must be currently authorized to work in Canada on a full-time basis now and in the future.
Accommodation will be provided in all parts of the hiring process as required under Motion Recruitmentโ€™s Employment Accommodation policy. Applicants need to make their needs known in advance.
