Senior Assembly Language Programmer information

What does a Senior Assembly Language Programmer do?

A Senior Assembly Language Programmer designs, writes, and maintains low-level software using assembly language, which directly interacts with computer hardware. They optimize critical system components for performance and efficiency, often working on embedded systems, operating systems, or device drivers. Their responsibilities include debugging complex code, improving system stability, and collaborating with hardware engineers to ensure software integrates seamlessly with hardware. With their advanced knowledge, they also mentor junior programmers and contribute to architectural decisions.

What are some common challenges faced by Senior Assembly Language Programmers when working on legacy systems?

Senior Assembly Language Programmers often encounter challenges such as deciphering poorly documented or outdated code, ensuring compatibility with modern hardware, and troubleshooting obscure bugs that may not manifest in higher-level languages. Collaborating with cross-functional teams can also be complex, as few colleagues may have deep assembly expertise. To address these issues, programmers typically rely on thorough code reviews, strong analytical skills, and effective communication to bridge knowledge gaps and ensure the stability and performance of critical systems.

What is the difference between Senior Assembly Language Programmer vs Embedded Systems Engineer?

AspectSenior Assembly Language ProgrammerEmbedded Systems Engineer
CredentialsTypically requires a degree in Computer Science or Electrical Engineering, with experience in assembly languageRequires a degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or related fields, often with knowledge of embedded programming
Work EnvironmentPrimarily focused on low-level programming, debugging hardware interfaces, and optimizing assembly codeDesigning, developing, and testing embedded systems, often involving both hardware and software components
Industry UsageUsed in industries like aerospace, defense, and hardware manufacturing where low-level programming is criticalCommon in consumer electronics, automotive, medical devices, and IoT sectors

The main difference is that Senior Assembly Language Programmers specialize in low-level assembly coding for hardware optimization, while Embedded Systems Engineers work on designing and developing complete embedded solutions, often combining hardware and software skills. Both roles require technical expertise but focus on different aspects of embedded technology.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Senior Assembly Language Programmer, and why are they important?

A Senior Assembly Language Programmer needs deep expertise in low-level programming, computer architecture, and debugging, usually supported by a degree in computer science or a related field and several years of relevant experience. Familiarity with specific assembly languages (such as x86 or ARM), integrated development environments (IDEs), debuggers, and version control systems is critical. Exceptional problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and the ability to communicate complex technical concepts clearly are standout soft skills. These competencies ensure the delivery of efficient, reliable, and optimized code essential for performance-critical systems.

Job description

Agility's commercially deployed humanoids operate alongside teams in warehouses, manufacturing facilities, and distribution centers—tackling physically demanding and repetitive tasks while enabling workers to focus on higher-value work. With industry-leading safety standards and years of proven deployment data, we're pioneering a new era of automation that enhances human potential.

About the Role

The Senior Supplier Quality Engineer drives supplier quality strategy for critical hardware and electromechanical supply chains. This role develops supplier quality metrics, qualification methods, audit processes, and development plans to build a reliable, scalable, and high-performing supplier base.

We are based in Salem, OR and also have an office in Fremont, CA and require 5 days/week in-office collaboration.

About the work

  • Audit strategic suppliers quality systems and manufacturing processes to ensure selection, qualification, and ongoing approval against internal quality requirements.
  • Lead part-by-part qualification, PPAP, and FAI through product development, new part introduction, and supplier onboarding.
  • Review and provide feedback on supplier DFM, control plans, inspection plans, and test strategies for PCBA, electromechanical, and box-build assemblies.
  • Qualify and monitor suppliers producing PCBA, conformal-coated boards, cable assemblies, harnesses, connectors, sensors, motors, actuators, and integrated electromechanical subassemblies.
  • Evaluate compliance to relevant electronics and assembly standards, including IPC-A-610, J-STD-001, IPC/WHMA-A-620, and any applicable customer requirements.
  • Assess supplier process capability for soldering, reflow, wave solder, cleaning, coating, crimping, connection, torqueing, test, and traceability controls.
  • Drive supplier root cause analysis, CAPA, and containment actions for electrical, mechanical, and mixed-technology failures.
  • Establish and maintain supplier quality requirements, including traceability, change control, inspection criteria, and nonconformance escalation.
  • Analyze supplier performance data to identify trends, prevent escapes, and improve delivery, yield, and field reliability.
  • Lead supplier audits and source inspections for incoming complex components and assemblies, including hidden-defect risks such as solder defects, intermittent connections, and harness termination failures.
  • Partner with supply chain, manufacturing, and engineering to remediate supplier issues and implement process improvements that support launch readiness and production stability.
  • Support implementation and continuous improvement of the QMS with emphasis on supplier quality for hardware, electronics, and electromechanical products.
Key qualities and skills
  • Strong understanding of electromechanical manufacturing processes, quality systems, and industrial engineering principles.
  • Deep knowledge of PCBA fabrication and assembly, electromechanical assembly processes, as SMT, wave solder, rework, cabling, and final test.
  • Expert at GD&T and able to interpret mechanical drawings, PCB assemblies, harness drawings, and interface specifications.
  • Familiarity with IPC standards, supplier process audits, and acceptance criteria for electronic assemblies.
  • Strong communication, interpersonal, and negotiation skills.
  • Ability to work effectively in a cross-functional team environment.
  • Excellent problem-solving and analytical skills.
  • Proficient in quality engineering tools and methodologies.
  • Knowledge of industry standards and regulatory requirements relevant to hardware and electronics manufacturing.
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to quality.
  • Ability and willingness to travel to U.S. and foreign suppliers 10-50% of the time.
About You
  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or related engineering discipline plus 10+ years of relevant Supplier Quality Engineering experience, or equivalent education and experience.
  • Demonstrated technical expertise in quality engineering principles, tools, and methodologies for hardware, electronics, and electromechanical products.
  • Extensive experience assessing and qualifying suppliers, performing audits, source inspections, driving RCAs, and implementing CAPA.
  • Strong understanding of QMS development, including supplier-facing policies, SOPs, and control requirements.
  • Strong knowledge of NPI quality requirements at the supplier level within a hardware manufacturing company.
  • Extensive experience with quality tools such as FAI, PPAP, CAPA, 8D, FMEA, and risk-based supplier management.
  • Proficiency with analytical applications such as JMP, Minitab, Tableau, Power BI, and Excel.
  • Strong ability to generate and analyze supplier KPI data, present trends, and influence cross-functional decisions.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills in a customer-service culture.
  • Ability to work independently while driving projects and influencing suppliers.
  • ASQ certifications such as CQE, CSQP, or CMQ/OE are a plus.
  • Familiarity with Net-Inspect is a plus
