What does a senior architectural engineer do?

A Senior Architectural Engineer is responsible for overseeing the design, planning, and construction of building projects, ensuring they meet both aesthetic and structural standards. They collaborate with architects, engineers, and construction teams to develop project specifications, select appropriate materials, and ensure compliance with building codes and regulations. In addition to technical expertise, they often manage project timelines, budgets, and mentor junior staff. Their role is crucial in delivering safe, functional, and visually appealing structures.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a senior architectural engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Senior Architectural Engineer, you need a deep understanding of architectural design, structural engineering principles, and project management, typically supported by a relevant engineering degree and professional licensure (e.g., PE or RA). Mastery of industry-standard software such as AutoCAD, Revit, and BIM platforms, along with knowledge of building codes and sustainability standards, is crucial. Exceptional leadership, problem-solving abilities, and clear communication skills help manage teams and collaborate with stakeholders. These competencies ensure the successful delivery of complex projects that meet safety, quality, and client requirements.

The main difference between a Senior Architectural Engineer and an Architectural Designer lies in their focus and responsibilities. The Senior Architectural Engineer emphasizes technical design, engineering integration, and project management, often requiring engineering credentials. In contrast, the Architectural Designer concentrates on conceptual design, visualizations, and client interactions. Both roles are vital in the architecture and construction industry but serve different stages of the project development process.

How does a senior architectural engineer typically collaborate with other disciplines on large-scale projects?

Senior Architectural Engineers frequently work closely with structural, mechanical, and electrical engineers, as well as project managers and architects, to ensure all aspects of a project are integrated smoothly. They often lead interdisciplinary meetings, coordinate technical details, and review designs to address constructability and compliance with codes. This role requires strong communication and leadership skills to align different teams, resolve conflicts, and drive the project toward successful completion. Effective collaboration is crucial for meeting client expectations and maintaining project timelines.

Job description

Senior Job Captain

Full-Time | On-Site | Lake Forest, Southern California

Bring Precision and Leadership to Projects That Shape Southern California.

Salary: $80,000–$110,000 annually (based on experience and qualifications)

Location: Lake Forest, Southern California

Type: Full-Time, On-Site

Why This Role

KSP Studio is looking for a Senior Job Captain who takes pride in getting the details right. This is a hands-on leadership role — you'll drive projects from design through construction, keep consultants and teams aligned, and make sure every set of drawings reflects the design intent with precision.

If you're a technically sharp Revit and CAD expert who wants real ownership over production, not just a seat producing documents, we want to talk to you.

What You'll Own

•      Lead the preparation, coordination, and production of construction documents

•      Partner with project managers, architects, and consultants to ensure quality, accuracy, and compliance with project goals

•      Review and coordinate consultant drawings — structural, MEP, civil, and more — for consistency

•      Provide technical guidance and quality control across project teams

•      Conduct building code research under PM/PA direction and ensure adherence to all applicable codes and regulations

•      Lead the permitting process across multiple city jurisdictions

What You Bring

•      8+ years of architectural experience, including 3+ years as a Job Captain or Senior Job Captain

•      Required proficiency in Revit and AutoCAD; experience with other design tools is a plus

•      Strong knowledge of building systems, materials, and construction methods

•      Sharp organizational, problem-solving, and time-management skills

•      Strong written and verbal communication skills

•      Proven ability to lead multiple projects and meet deadlines with limited supervision

•      Bachelor's degree in architecture or related field

•      Experience with commercial, institutional, or mixed-use projects preferred; architectural licensure (or progress toward it) is a plus

What You'll Get

•      Competitive salary ($80,000–$110,000, based on experience)

•      Comprehensive benefits package

•      A collaborative, design-driven culture that values precision and leadership

•      Stability with real room to grow as we expand our project portfolio

•      A team that trusts you to own your projects, not just execute someone else's checklist
