What does a Senior Architectural Engineer do?

A Senior Architectural Engineer is responsible for overseeing the design, planning, and construction of building projects, ensuring they meet both aesthetic and structural standards. They collaborate with architects, engineers, and construction teams to develop project specifications, select appropriate materials, and ensure compliance with building codes and regulations. In addition to technical expertise, they often manage project timelines, budgets, and mentor junior staff. Their role is crucial in delivering safe, functional, and visually appealing structures.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Senior Architectural Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Senior Architectural Engineer, you need a deep understanding of architectural design, structural engineering principles, and project management, typically supported by a relevant engineering degree and professional licensure (e.g., PE or RA). Mastery of industry-standard software such as AutoCAD, Revit, and BIM platforms, along with knowledge of building codes and sustainability standards, is crucial. Exceptional leadership, problem-solving abilities, and clear communication skills help manage teams and collaborate with stakeholders. These competencies ensure the successful delivery of complex projects that meet safety, quality, and client requirements.

Company: AB Design Group
Location: Longwood, FL (100% On-Site)

About us

AB Design Group is a well-established architectural firm specializing in residential builder-series production homes, including single-family homes, townhomes, and condos. The studio also completes select light commercial projects and supports some of the area's leading home builders in a fast-paced, collaborative environment.

Position overview

AB Design Group is seeking an experienced Senior Architectural Draftsman focused on producing high-quality, buildable construction documents for residential builder clients. This fully in-office role is best suited for a proactive, detail-oriented technical professional who excels in drafting, coordination, and resolving plan and field issues.

Key responsibilities

  • Develop complete, code-compliant Construction Documents for single-family and multi-family residential projects, including architectural and basic structural plan components.
  • Interpret and implement redlines from architects, project managers, engineers, and clients with a high level of accuracy and consistency.
  • Coordinate with outside consultants and trades (Structural Engineer, Truss Company, MEP, etc.) to incorporate their drawings, specifications, and revisions into the CD set.
  • Review drawings for quality control, constructability, and consistency across plan series, elevations, and options.
  • Prepare, update, and maintain permit-ready plan sets and respond to Building Department comments with clear, coordinated revisions.
  • Provide technical drafting support during construction, including revisions for field conditions, required repairs, and builder-requested changes.
  • Maintain organized digital files, drawing standards, and sheet setups to support efficient production and quick plan turnaround.
  • Work within deadlines in a high-paced work environment while communicating progress and issues to the Project Manager or Principal Architect.

Qualifications

  • 5–8 years of architectural drafting experience in an architectural firm, with a strong background in residential construction.
  • Extensive experience preparing and editing Construction Documents in a production-home or similar environment.
  • Light commercial drafting experience is a plus but not required.
  • Proficient in all stages of Construction Document creation and review, from schematic layouts through permit-ready sets.
  • Associate or bachelor’s degree in Architecture, Drafting, Construction, or a related field (preferred, not required).
  • Working knowledge of current Florida Building Code and related standards (Accessibility Code, NEC, etc.).
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to document revisions and respond to internal and client emails clearly and professionally.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, Outlook); proficiency in CAD/BIM software consistent with office standards is required.

Compensation and benefits

  • Competitive salary commensurate with experience.
  • Partially Subsidized health insurance: Medical, Dental, Vision.
  • Paid vacation, PTO, and holidays.
  • 401k plan with company match.
  • Company-paid Life Insurance policy
  • Long-term disability insurance.
  • Opportunities for professional growth into project lead or management roles for qualified candidates.
