What does a senior architect do?

As a senior architect, your responsibilities are to oversee the plan for a construction project at an architectural firm from inception to completion. To accomplish this, you use CAD software, build models, iterate designs based on suggestions or customer requirements, and ensure the final plan complies with relevant building codes and other legislation (particularly the Americans with Disabilities Act, which imposes specific requirements on building designs). Your duties also include supporting a firm's marketing efforts, creating presentation materials, providing input on finishing and furniture choices, guiding builders, and making suggestions for the use of space. A senior architect position differs from a senior technology architect, which involves working with technology-building software and programming languages.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a senior architect, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Senior Architect, you need advanced design expertise, a professional degree in architecture, and licensure as an architect. Familiarity with CAD and BIM software like AutoCAD, Revit, and SketchUp, as well as project management tools, is typically required. Strong leadership, communication, and problem-solving skills set outstanding Senior Architects apart when leading teams and working with clients. These abilities are crucial for delivering innovative, feasible designs and successfully managing complex architectural projects from concept to completion.

How does a senior architect typically collaborate with project managers and engineering teams during large-scale projects?

As a Senior Architect, you will regularly collaborate with project managers and engineering teams to ensure that architectural designs are feasible, align with project goals, and adhere to regulatory standards. This often involves participating in coordination meetings, reviewing technical drawings, and providing guidance on complex design challenges. Senior Architects play a key role in bridging creative vision with practical implementation, making effective communication and teamwork essential. You may also be responsible for mentoring junior team members and helping to resolve cross-disciplinary issues as they arise.

What is the difference between Senior Architect vs Project Architect?

The main difference between a Senior Architect and a Project Architect lies in their responsibilities. Project Architects primarily handle project coordination, design documentation, and client communication. Both roles require similar credentials and work in comparable environments, but Senior Architects have a broader scope and leadership responsibilities.

How much does a senior architect get paid?

A senior architect's salary typically ranges from $80,000 to $150,000 annually, depending on experience, location, and industry. They often have advanced certifications and oversee complex projects, which can influence compensation levels.

Job Description
Architect / Senior Architect - Solution Owner
This role is not eligible for 100% remote work and employees must live within a commutable distance to the office in which the role is based.
Who You'll Work With
Slalom's Solution Owners are lead-from-the-front technology and Agile delivery experts dedicated to their projects and clients. We partner with clients to translate requirements into actionable user stories and lead cross-capability development teams to deliver working products on time and on budget. We work within high-velocity software engineering teams, bringing expertise in Agile software delivery. Solution Owners are passionate, flexible Agile experts who continually practice and hone their craft.
What You'll Do
As an Architect/Senior Architect-level Solution Owner, you'll be the project expert in Agile software delivery. You'll lead large development pods, either as a stand-alone team or as a single workstream within a multi-workstream program. Core responsibilities include:
  • Defining and managing project governance (e.g., establishing cadence, leading Scrum ceremonies).
  • Working closely with Product Owners to define the product, identify requirements, and write user stories that are easily consumed by engineering teams.
  • Leading delivery teams, managing issues and risks, facilitating meetings, and providing clear project status updates.
  • Collaborating with engineering leaders, including Solution Architects, to validate the technical approach, strategy, and deliverables.
  • Preparing and delivering client-facing presentations and artifacts.
  • Experience identifying where AI-enabled capabilities or tools may support product development, delivery workflows, or team productivity (e.g., AI-assisted documentation, backlog refinement, analysis, or prototyping).

What You'll Bring
As an Architect/Senior Architect-level Solution Owner, you bring several years of product development experience as a Product, Project, or Program Manager using Agile development methodologies across the full software and testing lifecycle. You demonstrate:
  • Skill in defining and documenting business and functional requirements for iterative software development.
  • Ability to act as a liaison between business and technical teams to ensure timely, effective solutions.
  • Strong investigative, analytical, and communication skills.
  • Comfort working independently or as part of a team in challenging environments.
  • Knowledge of Agile frameworks including Scrum, Kanban, SAFe, XP, and Lean.
  • Strong risk identification and mitigation skills.
  • Excellent organizational skills and the ability to synthesize complex information.
  • A technology-oriented mindset; a computer-science-based education is helpful.

Nice to have:
Familiarity with AI concepts or tools used in modern delivery environments (e.g., generative AI for user story drafts, meeting summaries, documentation support, or client communication), as well as an understanding of how AI services from major cloud providers can support product or solution development.
