Department Overview

The mission of the Information Technology Group (ITG) is to develop, implement and maintain technology-based services and solutions enabling OHSU to effectively manage information to accomplish its missions.

Team members must be adaptable, shifting between operational support and project-based work as organizational needs evolve.

Function/Duties of Position

As a Senior Application Engineer on the Healthcare Professional Service Applications (HPSA) team, this role serves as a primary source of advanced technical expertise supporting clinical applications, devices, and integrated systems. This position operates with a high level of autonomy, leading complex troubleshooting, guiding technical direction, and aligning solutions with organizational and departmental goals.

This role requires a blend of deep technical knowledge, clinical application support experience, and strong project leadership. The Senior Application Engineer partners closely with clinical teams, vendors, and IT colleagues to ensure reliable, secure, and compliant systems that support patient care and operations. The position also contributes to technical roadmaps, mentors other engineers, and helps drive continuous improvement across supported services.

  • Provide advanced technical support and oversight for clinical applications, third-party systems, and integrated medical devices.
  • Lead system maintenance, troubleshooting, and issue resolution, including root cause analysis and prevention strategies.
  • Manage and coordinate technical projects, ensuring delivery within scope and timelines.
  • Serve as an IT consultant to clinical and operational teams, identifying workflow improvements and recommending solutions.
  • Maintain system integrations and interfaces, ensuring reliable implementation, testing, and documentation of changes.
  • Monitor system performance and usage, recommending configuration or process improvements to meet evolving needs.
  • Collaborate with vendors and internal teams to resolve issues and optimize system performance.
  • Ensure compliance with security, privacy, regulatory, and HIPAA requirements.
  • Apply ITIL-based practices for incident, change, and asset management.
  • Develop and maintain clear technical documentation across systems and processes.
  • Contribute to technical strategy, including roadmap development and long-term planning for supported services.
  • Act as a subject matter expert, providing technical guidance, design input, and effort estimates.
  • Mentor and support other engineers, fostering team development and knowledge sharing.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in computer science, a related field, or a clinical field and eight years work related experience in the information technology field or a combination of clinical or operational healthcare environments; OR 
  • Associate's degree in computer science, a related field, or a clinical field and nine years work related experience in the information technology field or a combination of clinical or operational healthcare environments; OR 
  • Ten years work related experience in the information technology field or a combination of clinical or operational healthcare environments; OR 
  • Equivalent combination of education and experience where one year of experience will be substituted for an Associate's degree and two years of experience will be substituted for a Bachelor's degree.

Experience

Successful candidates must have experience and working knowledge in operating system software, relational and/or hierarchical databases, and technical application support for administrative and clinical systems.

  • 2 years working experience as an Application Engineer.
  • Experience in the analysis and design of systems and experience with databases.
  • Experience in developing specifications for system-to-system interfaces.
  • Successful clients must have experience in managing multiple projects.
  • Experience in managing complex customer relationships in an enterprise setting.
  • Experience with device integration and network communication.
  • Experience mentoring and developing application engineers.
  • Experience managing vendor and customer relations.
  • Experience navigating and coordinating current and future state technology solutions and creating technical roadmaps.
  • Experience performing a team lead role.

Preferred Qualifications
  • BS Degree in Computer Sciences or related field.
  • Experience in Healthcare Information Systems.
  • Experience in terminal emulation software, file transfer, and data conversions.
  • Experience in writing system validation plans.
  • Experience and/or training in one or more of the following health information systems:  Imaging, Cardiology (Echoes), Labs, Pharmacy systems and EPIC
  • Medical Device integration and management.
  • Document management.
  • Healthcare IT regulatory policies.
  • PHI regulatory requirements.
  • Working knowledge of HL7 and TCP/IP.
  • Powershell Scripting.
  • Working knowledge of healthcare information systems supported by this workgroup.
  • ITIL foundation certification.
  • JIRA or other request management systems.
  • Maintaining cloud-based infrastructure.
