Apheresis Technician
JOB OVERVIEW
Determines the suitability of whole blood and apheresis blood component donors and patients according to established standards,
Collects and processes blood components and therapeutic products from suitable donors and patients using automated and non-automated procedures,
Possesses knowledge of blood collection theory and practice to diagnose, educate and treat donor, patient, and staff responses to actual or potential problems,
QUALIFICATIONS
  • REQUIRED High school diploma and current CPR certification,
  • Minimum of 5 years general and or blood donor phlebotomy experience,

PREFERRED
  • Phlebotomy and or IV certification,
  • National laboratory certification,
  • Apheresis and or automated medical instrumentation procedural expertise desirable,
  • Background in patient care and or whole blood separation techniques helpful,

SCHEDULING REQUIREMENTS
Full Time, Day Shift,
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
RECEPTION AND DONOR INFORMATION
Greets patients, donors in reception and or donor room area in a pleasant and helpful manner,
Determines and assists in completion of functions such as verification of appointment time and type, scheduling of necessary appointments, and assuring completeness and accuracy of all patient paperwork,
Can register donors in BCIS and eDonor when a receptionist is not on duty,
Keeps confidential information in an appropriate place,
Understands the importance of maintaining patient/donor privacy and respects the confidentiality of all donor information,
APHERESIS COLLECTIONS, THERAPEUTIC PROCEDURES AND DONOR WHOLE BLOOD PHLEBOTOMY
Collects blood and blood components from suitable donors and patients using automated and non-automated procedures,
Monitors established quality control procedures on analytical tests, equipment, reagents, etc,
Evaluate results of quality control and implements corrective action when indicated,
Operates, calibrates, conducts performance checks and maintains clinical laboratory instruments in section,
Recognizes and corrects basic instrument malfunctions,
May have to refer serious malfunctions to supervisor,
Under the direction and supervision of a Therapeutic Apheresis RN performs therapeutic apheresis procedures and HPC collections,
Performs procedures in a safe and professional manner to minimize discomfort to the donor, patient and to minimize the number of incomplete procedures,
Adheres to all FDA, NJDOH, AABB, FACT and Blood Services guidelines to insure patient, donor safety and product acceptability,
Correctly assigns each donation a unique number and collects requested laboratory specimens for testing,
Projects professional and pleasant manner to make the patient/donor relaxed and at ease,
Provides observation and post-procedural care to recognize any unstable situations and intervene appropriately,
Releases donors and patients only when they appear in satisfactory condition,
Accurately and completely documents all procedures and data in the BCIS, on run sheets and apheresis forms in a timely manner,
Communicates effectively and accurately the need for blood products to potential designated and volunteer donors over the telephone,
Schedules donors as directed when assigned to Donor Recruitment,
Talks to families, employees and visitors about the need for volunteer blood donations
DONOR PATIENT OBSERVATION AND REACTION INTERVENTION
Monitors patients and donors carefully and is able to recognize and intervene in any unstable situation or donor reaction,
Under the direction of an RN, administers appropriate care to minimize and alleviate any donor, patient reaction signs and symptoms,
Documents all donor, patient reactions appropriately,
Summons nurse and or physician immediately if severe donor reaction occurs or if there are any questions about donor's condition prior to release,
BLOOD DONOR CONVERSION AND RETENTION
Educates designated and volunteer donors about multiple component donations,
Converts donors to multiple product donations,
Schedule their next appointment before leaving the blood services using eDonor,
INVENTORY RESPONSIBILITIES
Receives, verifies, and signs for incoming supplies, as required,
BLOOD COMPONENT PREPARATION
Prepares components from whole blood and apheresis procedures according to Blood Services protocols so that components are prepared as soon as possible within appropriate time after donation,
Whole blood and blood components are promptly stored in proper storage areas within established timeframes,
Accurately records all required data in BCIS and manual logs so that records are complete when production is finished,
PROFESSIONAL BEHAVIOR AND CONTINUED EDUCATION
Demonstrates flexibility and initiative on the job as evidenced by willingness to take on additional assignments and or work additional hours when requested,
Understands the duties of other comparable positions in the department, cross trained and competent to perform coverage when needed,
Continually assesses Blood Services systems and notifies responsible individuals of suggestions to effect positive change,
Maintains and expands knowledge as evidenced by documentation of internal and external seminars lectures, reading professional journals, and self tutoring programs, video and audiocassettes,

PHYSICAL FUNCTIONS
Frequent walking from one blood services section to another, standing for long periods, bending to attend donations,
Occasional stretching, lifting, and pushing of equipment and supplies,
Transport of coolers with blood products and or samples from various sites or mobile operations to the Blood Services Laboratory,
Manual dexterity for donation procedures and component processing,
Good hearing and speaking for communication responsibilities,
