What does a semiconductor technology director do?

A Semiconductor Technology Director oversees the development, implementation, and management of semiconductor technologies within an organization. They are responsible for leading teams of engineers and scientists, setting strategic goals for research and development, and ensuring that products meet industry standards and customer needs. Their role often includes collaborating with other departments, staying updated on technological advancements, and guiding the company’s technical vision to maintain a competitive edge. Additionally, they may be involved in budgeting, project management, and fostering partnerships with external stakeholders.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a semiconductor technology director?

To thrive as a Semiconductor Technology Director, you need deep expertise in semiconductor physics, process engineering, and device fabrication, typically backed by an advanced degree in electrical engineering or a related field. Familiarity with EDA tools, process simulation software, and industry standards is crucial, along with experience managing large-scale R&D projects. Leadership, strategic vision, and strong communication skills set outstanding directors apart in guiding cross-functional teams and driving innovation. These skills ensure effective technology development, competitive positioning, and successful execution of complex semiconductor initiatives.

What are the main challenges semiconductor technology directors face when leading cross-functional teams in fast-paced R&D environments?

Semiconductor Technology Directors often encounter challenges in aligning diverse teams—such as process engineers, designers, and production specialists—toward unified project goals, especially under tight deadlines. Managing rapid technological advancements and integrating new processes or materials can create coordination hurdles. Directors must foster open communication, facilitate knowledge sharing, and ensure that all team members stay focused on both innovation and manufacturability. Adapting to shifting priorities from stakeholders while maintaining project timelines is also a key responsibility in this dynamic field.

What is the difference between Semiconductor Technology Director vs Semiconductor Process Engineer?

Job description

Shape the future of semiconductor technology at a company that's growing fast - and investing in the best.

ASM is expanding its technology leadership and market impact across multiple semiconductor applications. As a Technical Director, you will play a pivotal role in identifying and shaping critical technology inflections that drive mid- to long-term business growth. This role offers significant opportunity to influence strategy, work closely with customers on complex technical challenges, and grow your career in an environment where individuals truly matter.

You will partner with customers, R&D, and global manufacturing teams to translate evolving technology needs into actionable roadmaps that enable new applications, secure business wins, and ensure successful transfer to high-volume manufacturing.

What you'll be doing

  • Identify and drive technology inflections that support ASM's mid- and long-term business strategy.
  • Lead new product introduction (NPI) programs, including system qualification and system matching, to meet or exceed customer performance requirements.
  • Serve as a trusted technical leader for customers, engaging directly with their advanced development teams.
  • Understand current customer technology needs while anticipating future requirements and opportunities.
  • Develop and maintain technical roadmaps and materials for internal and external stakeholders.
  • Collaborate across Product Development, Product Marketing, Service Engineering, and Operations to deliver a strong customer experience.
  • Lead and coordinate multi-site, global customer projects that build trust in ASM's capabilities and secure new business.
  • Drive alignment through structured reviews and cross-functional collaboration.

What we're looking for

  • PhD in Chemical Engineering, Materials Science, or a closely related discipline.
  • 10+ years of experience in the semiconductor industry, including leading a team
  • Deep semiconductor expertise with a strong understanding of manufacturing processes, market dynamics, and customer environments.
  • Proven technical leader with experience building, developing, and inspiring high-performing teams while driving meaningful change.
  • Strategic thinker and executor who can translate complex technical insights into clear roadmaps, decisions, and business impact.
  • Trusted communicator and influencer with executive-level presentation skills and the ability to engage effectively at all levels.
  • Collaborative, self-directed leader who thrives in fast-paced, matrixed organizations and builds strong partnerships with customers and internal teams.

Why join ASM as a Technical Director

  • Access to industry-leading technology in a company with strong growth momentum.
  • The opportunity to win across multiple applications and markets.
  • High-impact, rewarding customer interactions solving real technical challenges.
  • A role where you are more than a number, with visibility, ownership, and a clear growth path.
  • A collaborative culture that values expertise, leadership, and results.
