Semiconductor Quality Engineer information

What are some common challenges semiconductor quality engineers face in ensuring product reliability?

Semiconductor Quality Engineers often encounter challenges related to rapidly evolving manufacturing processes, stringent industry standards, and the need to detect minute defects that can impact chip performance. They must work closely with cross-functional teams, including design, process, and production engineers, to implement robust quality controls and root cause analyses. Staying updated on new technologies and maintaining clear communication are essential for managing quality issues efficiently and ensuring that products meet both customer and regulatory expectations.

What does a semiconductor quality engineer do?

A Semiconductor Quality Engineer is responsible for ensuring that semiconductor products meet established quality standards and specifications. They develop and implement quality control processes, perform failure analysis, and collaborate with engineering and manufacturing teams to resolve quality issues. Their work includes analyzing data, conducting audits, and driving continuous improvement in production processes to minimize defects and ensure product reliability. Ultimately, they play a crucial role in guaranteeing that semiconductor devices are safe and perform as intended for end users.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a semiconductor quality engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Semiconductor Quality Engineer, you need expertise in quality assurance, semiconductor manufacturing processes, and statistical analysis, usually supported by a degree in engineering or a related field. Familiarity with tools such as Statistical Process Control (SPC), Failure Mode and Effects Analysis (FMEA), and quality management systems like ISO 9001 is typically required. Strong problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and effective communication skills set outstanding candidates apart. These competencies are essential to ensure product reliability, maintain industry standards, and drive continuous improvement in semiconductor manufacturing.

What is the difference between Semiconductor Quality Engineer vs Semiconductor Process Engineer?

AspectSemiconductor Quality EngineerSemiconductor Process Engineer
Primary FocusEnsuring product quality, defect prevention, and compliance with standardsDesigning, developing, and optimizing manufacturing processes
Skills & CertificationsQuality management, testing, inspection, certifications (e.g., ISO)Process engineering, manufacturing techniques, statistical analysis
Work EnvironmentQuality labs, manufacturing floors, supplier auditsCleanrooms, fabrication facilities, process development labs
Industry UsageUsed across semiconductor manufacturing companies focusing on product qualityUsed in process development and manufacturing optimization

The Semiconductor Quality Engineer primarily focuses on maintaining and improving product quality, ensuring standards are met, and preventing defects. In contrast, the Semiconductor Process Engineer concentrates on developing and refining manufacturing processes to enhance efficiency and yield. Both roles are essential in semiconductor manufacturing but serve different aspects of the production cycle.

Job description

Axcelis is seeking a mechanical engineer to lead the design and development of highly mechanized and automated capital equipment for the semiconductor industry. Working closely with product and marketing managers, the engineer is responsible for developing innovative solutions to difficult engineering challenges facing ion implanters. Projects may include new product development, continuous improvement, part obsolescence, and field-identified issues. The engineer will champion sound engineering methods, analysis tools, DfX, and concurrent product development processes to deliver solutions right the first time. In addition to owning projects, the engineer will also guide less experienced engineers, knowing when to coach and when to delegate to elevate others on the team.

Responsibilities

  • Develop new and innovative solutions for existing and future ion implanters.

  • Ensures adherence to the development process including requirements planning, schedule estimates, concept reviews, design reviews, verification, and validation test plans.

  • Monitors progress of projects, confers with program and project engineers and reviews reports to see that development is progressing according to schedule and within budgetary guidelines. Recommends corrective action as required.

  • Manages the mechanical engineering interface to the design services group and to offshore teams to deliver quality designs and on-time performance.

  • Communicates to customers and cross-functional groups the status of various development projects. Ensures that products and projects are delivered to meet customer requirements and specifications.

  • Holds mechanical engineers accountable to quality goals, schedules, development process, and system performance. The role requires close day-to-day interaction with both project managers and key customers to manage the complete mechanical engineering lifecycle for new and legacy products. Strong interpersonal skills are mandatory, together with a drive to succeed.

  • Ensures mechanical designs meet design objectives as well as safety, industry (SEMI), and customer specific requirements.

  • Executes design, qualification, and release of mechanical assemblies-experience with semiconductor capital equipment a plus.

  • Troubleshoot, find root cause, and recommend corrective actions to system-level problems that cross multiple engineering disciplines. Having some knowledge of controls and electrical systems would be helpful.

Qualifications

  • Accomplished mechanical engineer capable of contributing to technical design.

  • Know how to roll up your sleeves and get the job done right.

  • Practical experience with the design, manufacture, and service of highly automated electromechanical systems.

  • Have an unrelenting drive for understanding the fundamental physics behind the most complicated parts of our system; refuse to take things at face value.

  • Must possess strong decision-making, analytical, and problem-solving skills.

  • Solid technical background to understand, communicate, and make decisions to improve the overall product and mechanical architecture.

  • Experience working with offshore teams is a benefit.

  • Strong written and verbal skills.

  • Experience with a PLM system. Specific knowledge of the following is a plus: PTC/Windchill

  • 3D modeling and FEA analysis skills. Specific knowledge of the following is a plus: PTC/Creo, Ansys.

  • BSME (MSME preferred)

  • 5 years of experience in mechanical engineering
