Do people actually make money selling solar?

Selling solar panels can be profitable for sales representatives and contractors, especially with commissions and bonuses based on sales volume. Earnings depend on experience, sales skills, and the size of the projects sold, with successful sellers often earning a substantial income. However, income levels vary widely and depend on market demand and individual performance.

What are some common challenges faced when selling solar panels, and how can new sales professionals overcome them?

One common challenge in selling solar panels is addressing customer concerns about upfront costs and return on investment. New sales professionals can overcome this by becoming well-versed in available financing options, tax incentives, and long-term energy savings to demonstrate value. Additionally, navigating technical questions requires continuous learning about solar technology and industry trends. Building trust through transparent communication and collaborating closely with installation and support teams also helps ensure a smooth sales process and high customer satisfaction.

What is the difference between Selling Solar Panels vs Solar Installers?

AspectSelling Solar PanelsSolar Installers

Required CertificationsSales certifications, knowledge of solar productsElectrical or solar installation certifications, safety training
Work EnvironmentOffice, sales meetings, client sitesConstruction sites, rooftops, outdoor locations
Industry UsageSales and marketing within solar industryTechnical installation within solar industry

While Selling Solar Panels focuses on promoting and closing sales with customers, Solar Installers handle the technical installation and setup of solar systems. Both roles are essential in the solar industry but require different skills and certifications. Selling Solar Panels is more customer-facing and sales-oriented, whereas Solar Installers are hands-on technical professionals.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Solar Panel Sales Representative, and why are they important?

To succeed in selling solar panels, you need a strong understanding of renewable energy solutions, sales techniques, and typically a background in sales or a related field. Familiarity with CRM systems, solar design software, and industry certifications like NABCEP can be advantageous. Excellent communication, active listening, and persuasive negotiation skills help build trust and address customer concerns. These abilities are crucial for educating clients, closing sales, and driving business growth in a competitive and evolving market.

How much money can I make selling solar panels?

Sellers of solar panels, such as sales representatives or installers, can earn a wide range of income depending on experience, sales skills, and commission structures. Typically, sales roles in this field offer base salaries plus commissions, with top performers earning six-figure incomes annually through high sales volume and performance bonuses.

What does selling solar panels involve?

Selling solar panels involves educating potential customers about the benefits of solar energy, assessing their energy needs, and recommending appropriate solar solutions. Sales representatives often provide quotes, explain financing options, and guide customers through the installation process. The job requires knowledge of solar technology, strong communication skills, and the ability to address customer concerns about costs, savings, and installation. Building trust and staying updated on industry trends are also important for success in this field.

How much do you get paid for selling solar?

Sellers of solar panels typically earn a commission-based income, which can range from 5% to 20% of the sale price. The total earnings depend on sales volume, experience, and the company's compensation structure, with many earning between $40,000 and $100,000 annually. Some roles also include base salaries plus commissions, especially for experienced sales representatives.

How do I get into selling solar panels?

To start a career in selling solar panels, you typically need sales experience, knowledge of solar energy systems, and relevant certifications such as a solar sales or installation license. Building relationships with solar companies or contractors and understanding local regulations can also help you enter the field. Many sales roles require a valid driver's license and the ability to travel to customer sites.

Do People Tell You That You're Easy to Talk To?
We're looking for outgoing, energetic people who enjoy meeting new people and starting conversations.
If you've ever been described as friendly, confident, social, or someone who can talk to just about anyone, you may be exactly who we're looking for.
At HouseBuildr, you are NOT responsible for selling solar panels.
You are NOT expected to close deals.
You do NOT need previous solar experience.
Your job is simple:
Talk to homeowners, determine whether they're interested in learning about solar, and schedule an appointment with one of our experienced solar consultants.

You are not selling solar. You're simply identifying interested homeowners and setting appointments.

That's it.
Our closing team handles the technical conversations, pricing, proposals, and contracts.
We simply need great communicators who can open the door to the conversation.
What You'll Be Doing
  • Speaking with homeowners in targeted neighborhoods who we know have high utility bills
  • Starting friendly conversations with potential customers
  • Educating homeowners about California programs
  • Identifying homeowners interested in learning more
  • Scheduling appointments for our solar consultants
  • Tracking appointments and activity
  • Attending team trainings and meetings
Unlike many canvassing companies, we do not send our team to completely random neighborhoods.
Our leadership team researches areas with high utility costs and homeowners who are more likely to benefit from solar. We focus on working smarter, not harder.
Who Thrives In This Role?
This position is perfect for:
  • College students
  • Former athletes
  • Bartenders
  • Servers
  • Brand ambassadors
  • Retail employees
  • Customer service professionals
  • Event staff
  • Anyone who enjoys talking to people
You do NOT need previous sales experience.
What matters most is:
  • We can teach skills but not WILL
  • Strong communication skills
  • Confidence talking to strangers
  • Coachability
  • Reliability
  • Competitive mindset
  • Desire to earn more than a traditional hourly job
Compensation
Our compensation structure rewards effort and performance.
Appointment Pay
Earn compensation for every qualified appointment you schedule.
Expected performance:
  • Minimum 2 qualified appointments per day ($100 per qualified sit down)
  • Typically 10 qualified appointments per week (you'd make $1,000 a week)
  • Typically 2/10 appointments close - once deals close and been installed you get payed $1,500-2k PER DEAL CLOSED. You're looking at $3,500-4k a week.
Commission Opportunities
When appointments turn into installed solar projects, additional commissions are available.
Typical earning potential:
  • New Representatives: $1,000-$2,000+ weekly
  • Consistent Performers: $2,000-$4,000+ weekly
  • Top Performers: $5,000+ weekly
There is no cap on earnings.
Why HouseBuildr?
  • Fast-growing company
  • Positive team culture
  • Daily training and mentorship
  • Clear advancement opportunities
  • Learn communication and sales skills that last a lifetime
  • Opportunity to grow into leadership and closing roles
Many of our best team members started with little or no experience.
What they had was confidence, work ethic, and a willingness to learn.
