Tool Designer

Eldridge, IA – Full Time


Productive Resources (www.productiveresources.com) is seeking a candidate to be part of our engineering team at our customer's facility in Eldridge, IA. As a member of our team, the selected candidate will be responsible for designing fixtures, gauges, and special tooling used in machining and assembly operations. This role develops and maintains accurate 2D and 3D CAD models along with detailed drawings to support manufacturing requirements. The individual collaborates closely with manufacturing personnel and CNC programmers to ensure tooling designs are practical, efficient, and aligned with production needs. Appropriate materials, fits, and tolerances are selected based on functional requirements and application conditions.


This is a full-time position that is indefinite in duration with the opportunity of professional growth, and additional 

opportunities within our organization. 


Duties:

  • Create and refine tools and equipment used in manufacturing processes, ensuring they meet production requirements and specifications.
  • Work closely with engineers, production teams, and quality control to ensure tools are efficient, precise, and safe for use.
  • Stay updated with industry trends and advancements to incorporate innovative designs and improve existing tools.
  • Conduct tests on tools to ensure they meet quality and safety standards, making modifications as necessary based on trial data.
  • Prepare detailed drawings and specifications using CAD software and maintain records of tool designs and modifications.
  • Provide guidance and support to production teams regarding tool usage and troubleshooting.


Requirements:

  • High School/GED diploma or vocational school equivalent.
  • Minimum 2 years of experience in a Tool Design or Tooling Build position.
  • A solid grasp of engineering principles, materials science, and industry-specific knowledge is fundamental. 
  • Mastery of Creo for is crucial for creating precise designs.
  • Knowledge of processes such as machining and welding essential for designing tools that meet production requirements.
  • The ability to think creatively and solve problems is key, especially when working with complex geometries, material limitations, or strict budget constraints.
  • Tool design involves an iterative process, requiring designers to identify potential issues early on and come up with inventive solutions.
  • Precision is synonymous with tool design, and designers must be innovative to develop cutting-edge equipment that is efficient, cost-effective, and innovative.


Preferred:

  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering or engineering technology.
  • 2-5 years experience as a toolmaker or machinist in a tooling build position.
  • 5-10 years experience in a Tool Design position.
  • A minimum of 2 years in a Manufacturing or Industrial Environment.
