The Division of Institutional Planning & Operations (IP&O) employs a workforce of approximately 2,700 staff, represented by 15 collective negotiations agreements, and is responsible for institutional strategic initiatives and operations, which encompasses an expansive range of comprehensive service and business operations across the State of New Jersey. These include planning and construction, facilities, public safety and emergency operations, environmental health and safety, transportation, housing, and auxiliary/retail operations.
Posting Summary
Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, is seeking a Security Systems Technician for the Division of Institutional Planning & Operations (IP&O). The position is primarily responsible for the installation and repair of the campus-wide card access security system.
Among the key duties of this position are the following:
  • Duties include the installation of security panels, field interface devices, card readers, motion detectors, request to exit devices, door contacts, limit switches, fiber optic security cabling and all related control wiring.
  • Works with the security system software to program additional points, troubleshoot existing alarms, points in trouble and controllers that are off line.
  • Detects faulty operation of equipment, reports questionable conditions to supervisor; issues work orders to supervisor as necessary.
  • Works with the security system software to develop regular reports to management on the status of campus security systems. This includes number of points in alarm and/or bypassed. Responsible for minimizing these points. Conducts inventory of equipment, materials and supplies.
  • Advises management when to reorder stock.
  • Responsible for estimating work time, writing up list of appropriate and needed materials, and providing such materials for himself/herself or the group.
  • Provides guidance and instruction to craft trainees

Qualifications
Minimum Education and Experience
  • High school/vocational school education or equivalent, plus four years of experience performing maintenance and repair work on security access systems, electrical equipment and circuitry.
  • Successful completion of an approved training program or a certified apprenticeship program in Security/Access Systems, plus two years experience and proven competency performing complex and varied repair and maintenance of electronic equipment and circuitry including network communication wiring.
Certifications/Licenses
  • Valid driver's license, two years driving experience and successful completion of the Rutgers Defensive Driving Course.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Must be competent in performing complex and varied repair and maintenance of electrical and electronic equipment and circuitry including all types of security/access systems and components.
  • Requires competency with Windows based computer software used to control security access systems and the ability to read and comprehend technical manuals, wiring plans and blueprints.
  • Must be knowledgeable in the principals of network communication equipment operation and be able to trace faults.
  • Must be able to analyze complex tasks and prioritize work elements, be knowledgeable of work safety rules and principals, and be detail-oriented with the ability to handle multiple concurrent tasks.
  • Good written and verbal English skills and strong interpersonal skills needed.
  • Must be able to safely and properly lift as much as 40-50 pounds.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Trade school graduate, knowledgeable of computer based Energy Management and Access Control Systems preferred.

  • Successful candidate must undergo and pass a standard security screening/background check because of the close working relationship with Campus Security and the sensitive security access this individual will possess.
