Job description

General Purpose
Monitor and respond to physical security events across access control, intrusion detection, and video management systems within a 24/7/365 Security Operations Center. Analyze and assess alerts in real time, taking appropriate action to resolve, escalate, or coordinate response in accordance with established procedures and regulatory requirements. Maintain situational awareness across monitored facilities while ensuring timely, accurate documentation of all activities. The Security Monitoring Specialist applies critical thinking, sound judgment, and strong communication skills to support effective incident response and continuity of operations in a team-oriented environment.
Responsibilities
  • Monitor physical security systems, including access control, intrusion detection, and video management systems, to detect and respond to security events in real time.
  • Triage and prioritize alarms and alerts based on criticality, risk, and potential impact, ensuring timely and appropriate response actions.
  • Analyze and correlate information across multiple systems (e.g., badge activity, video feeds, alarms) to validate events and determine appropriate response or escalation.
  • Execute established incident response procedures, including escalation, notification, coordination, and response support with internal teams, external partners, or emergency services as required.
  • Maintain continuous situational awareness across monitored facilities, proactively identifying anomalies, suspicious behavior, or emerging threats.
  • Document incidents, actions taken, and observations in a timely manner, producing clear, accurate, and audit-ready documentation in accordance with organizational and regulatory standards.
  • Ensure compliance with NERC CIP requirements and other applicable regulations, policies, and procedures in all monitoring, response, and documentation activities.
  • Provide timely and professional communication to stakeholders, including employees, leadership, and external agencies, during routine operations and incidents.
  • Deliver high-quality customer service, assisting with access-related issues, inquiries, and security concerns while maintaining professionalism and discretion.
  • Utilize security systems and tools effectively, maintaining proficiency in access control, intrusion detection, video management, and incident management platforms.
  • Apply critical thinking and sound judgment when assessing ambiguous or complex situations and determining appropriate actions.
  • Collaborate with team members to ensure consistent monitoring, effective incident response, and continuity of operations across shifts.
  • Protect sensitive information by adhering to confidentiality and ethical standards when handling access data, video footage, and incident details.
  • Perform additional responsibilities as assigned.

Requirements
  • Associate degree in law enforcement, homeland security, information technology, or a related field; or equivalent combination of education and experience (typically three years of related progressive experience would be needed for candidates applying for this position who do not possess an associate's degree).
  • Working knowledge of physical security principles, including access control, video surveillance, alarm monitoring, incident response, and risk mitigation.
  • Working knowledge of NERC CIP standards and their application within a physical security environment, or the ability to quickly acquire this knowledge.
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively as part of a team, contributing to a positive work environment, supporting peers during high-demand situations, and ensuring continuity of operations across shifts.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Windows and M365 applications (e.g., Outlook, Teams, SharePoint) and the ability to learn and use security monitoring systems such as access control, intrusion detection, video management, and incident management platforms.
  • Strong critical thinking, problem-solving, and situational awareness, with the ability to assess conditions, identify anomalies, and determine appropriate actions in real time.
  • Ability to remain calm and effective under pressure, particularly during high-priority or rapidly evolving incidents.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, including clear incident documentation and timely stakeholder updates.
  • Strong customer service skills with the ability to interact professionally with employees, contractors, and external partners.
  • Demonstrated ethical judgment and integrity, including appropriate handling of sensitive information.
  • Ability to prioritize and manage multiple tasks and projects concurrently while maintaining accuracy and adherence to procedures.
  • Availability to work any shift, including nights, weekends, and holidays, in a 24/7/365 environment.

In addition to the above responsibilities the Security Monitoring Specialist III position includes the following:
  • Five years' experience working in a cyber and or physical security monitoring center or similar environment.
  • History of working in a Security Operations, law enforcement, or military environment

  • Previous experience working in a physical security operations center or similar environment.
  • Experience in security operations, law enforcement, or military.
