Established Northwest Houston Distributor serving the O&G industry is seeking an experienced Controller for a broad leadership role. The Controller will oversee all aspects of the accounting function while providing leadership in finance and administrative operations. This role is ideal for a technically strong accounting professional who thrives in a dynamic environment, enjoys improving processes, and is comfortable working in an organization where versatility and a hands-on approach are valued.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead all accounting and financial operations, including the month-end and year-end close process.
  • Prepare accurate monthly and annual financial statements, management reports, profitability analyses, and detailed account reconciliations.
  • Perform and oversee complex account analysis and reconciliations to ensure the accuracy and integrity of financial reporting.
  • Develop and maintain financial policies, internal controls, and administrative procedures to ensure compliance and operational efficiency.
  • Manage budgeting, cash flow, banking relationships, borrowing base reporting, and financial forecasting.
  • Coordinate annual audits and ensure compliance with accounting standards, tax regulations, and other reporting requirements.
  • Oversee inventory accounting, inventory valuation, and inventory control processes.
  • Direct the Accounts Payable, Accounts Receivable, payroll, and cash management functions.
  • Review customer and vendor credit terms, contracts, and financial agreements.
  • Administer sales tax compliance and regulatory reporting.
  • Oversee ERP systems (SAP), IT coordination, data security initiatives, and technology support.
  • Champion the continued enhancement of financial systems and automation initiatives, including tax automation (Avalara), reporting and business intelligence tools (Business Objects, AI-driven reporting), and accounts payable automation.
  • Identify opportunities to improve processes, strengthen internal controls, leverage technology, and increase operational efficiency.
  • Partner with executive leadership on strategic initiatives and special projects.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting or a related field required.
  • CPA designation preferred, not required.
  • 10+ years of progressive accounting and financial management experience, including leadership in a Controller or similar role.
  • Experience within a distribution, wholesale, manufacturing, or other inventory-driven environment strongly preferred.
  • Experience with SAP or a comparable ERP system.
  • Demonstrated strength in technical accounting, account analysis, reconciliations, and maintaining accurate financial records.
  • Experience working successfully in an environment where the Controller is willing to be hands-on and directly involved in day-to-day accounting operations.

Desired Skills

  • Strong knowledge of financial reporting, internal controls, budgeting, forecasting, cash flow management, and inventory accounting.
  • Technology-oriented mindset with an interest in leveraging automation and emerging technologies to improve accounting processes and reporting.
  • Experience with financial technology solutions such as Avalara, Business Objects, AP automation platforms, or similar tools is highly desirable.
