What is securities finance?

Securities finance is a financial service that involves lending or borrowing securities, such as stocks or bonds, typically to facilitate short selling, liquidity, or other investment strategies. In this process, one party (the lender) temporarily transfers securities to another party (the borrower) in exchange for collateral, often cash or other securities. The borrower pays a fee for this service and must return the securities at the end of the agreed period. Securities finance plays a key role in the functioning of financial markets by improving liquidity and price discovery.

How does a securities finance professional typically collaborate with traders, clients, and operations teams?

In Securities Finance, professionals act as a crucial link between traders, clients (such as institutional investors), and internal operations teams. They frequently communicate with traders to assess inventory and pricing, work with clients to meet borrowing or lending needs, and coordinate with operations to ensure accurate settlement and reporting. This collaborative environment demands strong interpersonal skills, attention to detail, and the ability to manage multiple priorities to ensure smooth and compliant transactions.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in securities finance, and why are they important?

To thrive in Securities Finance, you need a strong grasp of financial markets, securities lending/borrowing concepts, and quantitative analysis, often backed by a degree in finance, economics, or a related field. Familiarity with trading platforms, risk management systems, and certifications such as CFA or FRM are commonly expected. Excellent analytical thinking, attention to detail, and effective communication are vital soft skills for managing complex transactions and client relationships. These competencies are crucial for optimizing returns, minimizing risk, and ensuring regulatory compliance in a fast-paced, dynamic environment.

What is the difference between Securities Finance vs Securities Lending?

Securities Finance involves overseeing the borrowing and lending of securities to facilitate trading, collateral, and liquidity management. While closely related, securities finance covers broader activities including risk management and client services, whereas securities lending emphasizes the loan process itself.

In this role, you will architect, build, and deliver enterprise-scale software solutions that sit at the heart of critical securities and custody workflows, shaping how Citi's technology platforms perform at global scale. You will combine deep Java engineering expertise with senior leadership, guiding a team of engineers while influencing technical direction and partnering with business, compliance, and data stakeholders across the organization.

Partner with senior business leaders and end users to capture functional requirements and incorporate them into cohesive system designs that meet regulatory and compliance needs.

Identify and manage technical and operational risk within delivery decisions, escalating issues transparently and maintaining the integrity of systems and controls. Required qualifications & skills 10 or more years of hands-on software engineering experience, with a track record of delivering complex application systems in financial services environments. Deep proficiency in Core Java, Java EE, PL/SQL, Spring, Spring Boot, Hibernate, RESTful API development, and Unix scripting, with the ability to architect services independently.

Practical experience with microservice architecture and container orchestration using Docker and Kubernetes, and with messaging systems including Kafka and MQ Series. Proficiency in Oracle and MSSQL relational databases, including writing complex SQL queries and applying data profiling and data mapping tools. Hands-on experience with AI coding assistants such as GitHub Copilot, Cursor, Windsurf, Devin, or Claude as part of daily engineering workflows.

Demonstrated ability to lead engineering teams, manage cross-functional delivery, and communicate technical decisions clearly to senior stakeholders. Familiarity with regulatory data requirements, data governance, and compliance considerations in a financial services context. Beneficial skills & qualifications Deep knowledge of Custody, Funds, or Securities Finance, including an understanding of how these functions operate across front, middle, and back-office environments.

Familiarity with securities master data and market data, and how these data sets support trading and operational workflows. A Master's degree in a relevant technical or quantitative discipline. What we offer At Citi, you will work at the intersection of advanced engineering and global financial markets, with real ownership of systems that matter.

This is a senior role that offers both technical depth and leadership reach, within a high-performing team that values collaboration, precision, and continuous improvement. Hybrid working arrangement with 3 days in the office and 2 days working remotely, giving you flexibility alongside meaningful in-person collaboration. Strategic technical ownership and the opportunity to influence engineering architecture at scale across one of the world's leading financial institutions.
