What is securities finance?

Securities finance is a financial service that involves lending or borrowing securities, such as stocks or bonds, typically to facilitate short selling, liquidity, or other investment strategies. In this process, one party (the lender) temporarily transfers securities to another party (the borrower) in exchange for collateral, often cash or other securities. The borrower pays a fee for this service and must return the securities at the end of the agreed period. Securities finance plays a key role in the functioning of financial markets by improving liquidity and price discovery.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in Securities Finance, and why are they important?

To thrive in Securities Finance, you need a strong grasp of financial markets, securities lending/borrowing concepts, and quantitative analysis, often backed by a degree in finance, economics, or a related field. Familiarity with trading platforms, risk management systems, and certifications such as CFA or FRM are commonly expected. Excellent analytical thinking, attention to detail, and effective communication are vital soft skills for managing complex transactions and client relationships. These competencies are crucial for optimizing returns, minimizing risk, and ensuring regulatory compliance in a fast-paced, dynamic environment.

Securities Finance involves overseeing the borrowing and lending of securities to facilitate trading, collateral, and liquidity management. Securities Lending is a core component of securities finance, focusing specifically on loan transactions. While closely related, securities finance covers broader activities including risk management and client services, whereas securities lending emphasizes the loan process itself.

How does a Securities Finance professional typically collaborate with traders, clients, and operations teams?

In Securities Finance, professionals act as a crucial link between traders, clients (such as institutional investors), and internal operations teams. They frequently communicate with traders to assess inventory and pricing, work with clients to meet borrowing or lending needs, and coordinate with operations to ensure accurate settlement and reporting. This collaborative environment demands strong interpersonal skills, attention to detail, and the ability to manage multiple priorities to ensure smooth and compliant transactions.

We're hiring for an Account Manager to join us in New York, working closely with leading participants across the global securities finance market. Our commercial team partners with broker-dealers, agent lenders, beneficial owners and other market participants to help them maximise the value of our integrated trading, post-trade, data and regulatory solutions.
This position is well suited to securities finance professionals with strong market knowledge, industry relationships and an understanding of the vendor and product landscape. This will help guide strategic client conversations and identify opportunities where our solutions can drive efficiency, automation and transparency across the securities finance workflow.
You will work closely with product, client services and senior commercial leaders to strengthen client partnerships, uncover new opportunities and represent our capabilities across the industry.

  • Identify opportunities to expand adoption of our Securities Finance solutions across existing client organisations.
  • Lead strategic client discussions focused on improving operational efficiency, market access and transparency across the securities finance lifecycle.
  • Develop a deep understanding of each client's business model, technology landscape and operational challenges to identify areas where our solutions can add value.
  • Coordinate closely with product, client services and implementation teams to ensure successful onboarding, adoption and ongoing client satisfaction.
  • Maintain structured account plans that support long-term relationship development and multi-product growth across client organisations.
  • Represent our capabilities at industry conferences, client meetings and market events to strengthen our presence across the securities finance community.
  • Provide feedback to product teams on market trends, client needs and emerging industry challenges.
  • Ensure compliance with regulatory requirements, completing relevant FINRA certifications (SIE, S7, S63, S24) within 12 months if not already held.

What we're looking for

  • 8+ years of experience within the securities finance industry, such as roles across trading, middle or back office, prime brokerage, agency lending, financing desks or related market infrastructure.
  • Strong understanding of the securities finance ecosystem, including key workflows, operational challenges and the vendor landscape supporting the market.
  • A well-developed network of relationships across the industry.
  • Ability to translate market knowledge into commercial opportunities and strategic client conversations.
  • Strong communication skills with confidence engaging senior stakeholders across trading, operations and technology teams.
  • Experience working with or alongside securities finance platforms, post-trade infrastructure, market data or regulatory solutions.
  • Commercial awareness with the ability to identify growth opportunities within existing client relationships.
  • A collaborative approach with the ability to work closely with product, technology and client services teams.
  • Strong organisational skills with the ability to manage multiple client relationships simultaneously.

Why EquiLend?

  • Save for the future through our 401(k) benefit with EquiLend's contributions vesting from day one.
