How much do second in command pilot jobs pay per year?
What are some typical responsibilities and challenges faced by a Second In Command Pilot during flights?
As a Second In Command Pilot, your primary responsibilities include assisting the Captain during all phases of flight, monitoring instruments and controls, and managing radio communications with air traffic control. You may also be tasked with handling specific flight operations such as navigation, systems checks, and checklist management. One common challenge is remaining vigilant and responsive to rapidly changing flight conditions, as well as smoothly coordinating with both the Captain and the rest of the flight crew. This role provides valuable hands-on experience and mentorship, making it an excellent stepping stone toward a future Captain position.
What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the Second In Command Pilot position, and why are they important?
To thrive as a Second In Command Pilot, you need a commercial pilot’s license, in-depth knowledge of aviation operations, and strong understanding of flight safety procedures. Proficiency with aircraft-specific avionics, navigation systems, and FAA regulations is typically required, often supplemented by type ratings for particular aircraft. Outstanding communication, teamwork, and adaptability are essential soft skills for coordinating with the captain, crew, and air traffic control. These abilities ensure safe, efficient flights and are critical for supporting the captain under dynamic and sometimes high-pressure conditions.
What is a Second In Command Pilot job?
A Second In Command (SIC) Pilot, also known as a Co-Pilot, assists the Captain in operating an aircraft. They share flight duties, monitor systems, communicate with air traffic control, and help ensure passenger and crew safety. SIC pilots must be prepared to take control if needed and play a key role in navigation and decision-making. This position is critical in multi-pilot operations, especially in commercial and corporate aviation.

Job description
Why Your Role Matters
As an Assistant Site Lead, you are the second-in-command at your site, partnering closely with the Site Lead (Site Director) to ensure a safe, high-quality, and engaging licensed afterschool program for children ages 4--12. You help lead daily operations, support staff, and create meaningful experiences for youth and families.
This role also serves as the acting Site Director when the Site Lead is off-site, ensuring continuity in leadership, licensing compliance, and program quality. Each afternoon, you play a critical role in bringing the Y's mission to life, creating a space where every child feels safe, supported, and inspired.
This role is primarily scheduled on weekday afternoons at elementary school sites across Austin and nearby communities, with occasional weekend availability for trainings and special events.
How You Will Make an Impact
- Assist the Site Lead in managing daily program operations, ensuring a safe, organized, and engaging environment.
- Help guide and support Youth Development Leaders, fostering a collaborative, positive, and growth-focused team culture.
- Step into full site leadership responsibilities in the absence of the Site Lead, ensuring compliance, safety, and program continuity.
- Supervise a group of 12--17 youth while supporting overall site ratios and active supervision.
- Deliver and support curriculum including enrichment activities, academic support, creative projects, and physical activity.
- Build relationships with families and assist in communication, including planning and hosting family nights and events.
- Occasional travel between sites and YMCA locations is needed, including weekly pickup and drop-off of supplies and paperwork, attending meetings and trainings, and providing support at other program locations as assigned.
- Always Ensure adherence to Texas Child Care Licensing standards and YMCA policies.
- Assist with attendance, incident reports, behavior documentation, and other required records while maintaining confidentiality.
- Support resolution of daily challenges such as behavior concerns, transitions, late pickups, and staffing needs with professionalism.
- Model the YMCA's mission, vision, and values in all interactions.
- Represent and share the impact of YMCA programs with families and the community.
- Complete other duties as assigned to support program success.
What You Bring to the Y
- Must be at least 21 years of age with a high school diploma or equivalent.
- Availability to work Monday through Friday from 2:00 PM -- 6:30 PM, with occasional evenings and weekends for events and trainings.
- Must meet or be willing to obtain Texas Child Care Licensing requirements:
- At least 30 hours of training in child or youth development, recreational leadership, or management.
- Candidates with a minimum of 15 hours are eligible but must complete the remaining hours within 90 days (training provided).
- Minimum of 6 months of experience in a licensed childcare setting, or equivalent coursework in child development.
