What is seasonal work?

Seasonal work refers to temporary employment positions that are available only during certain times of the year, often based on industry needs or fluctuations in demand. Common examples include jobs in agriculture during harvest, retail during holidays, or tourism-related roles during peak travel seasons. These positions typically last for a few weeks to several months and can be a good option for those seeking short-term employment or extra income. Seasonal work can also provide valuable experience and, in some cases, may lead to permanent job opportunities.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in seasonal work?

To thrive in seasonal work, you generally need reliability, physical stamina, and the ability to quickly learn job-specific tasks, with minimal formal qualifications required. Familiarity with basic point-of-sale systems, warehouse equipment, or agricultural tools may be expected depending on the industry. Flexibility, teamwork, and a positive attitude help individuals stand out by adapting smoothly to changing schedules and diverse teams. These skills ensure efficient productivity and seamless integration during peak business periods, which is crucial to seasonal employers.

What are the typical expectations for flexibility and scheduling in seasonal work?

Seasonal work often requires a high degree of flexibility, as schedules may include evenings, weekends, and holidays to accommodate peak business periods. Employers typically look for individuals who can adapt to changing shifts and potentially work extra hours during busy times. It's common to be part of a team where collaboration and communication are essential to ensure smooth operations, especially during high-traffic periods. Being open to varied tasks and schedule changes can help you succeed and may even open the door to future opportunities with the employer.

Job description

Be Part of Something Spectacular: Public Exhibits Associate โ€“ Seasonal
Brookgreen Gardens | Murrells Inlet, SC
Seasonal (September โ€“ March) | Starting at $16.50/hour | Full-time hours + overtime | Non-Exempt
Every winter, Nights of a Thousand Candles draws visitors from across the country โ€” and around the world โ€” to walk beneath millions of sparkling lights in one of America's most breathtaking gardens. Behind every glowing pathway is a crew that built it by hand. That's where you come in: we're hiring the team that installs, maintains, and takes down the lights for our biggest event of the year. Hands-on, outdoor, deadline-driven โ€” and unforgettable.
Great for snowbirds, retirees, career-changers, veterans, students โ€” anyone who wants meaningful seasonal work and a story to tell.
What This Role Requires โ€” Please Read Before Applying
  • Must be comfortable climbing ladders up to 20 feet and working at heights over 50 feet โ€” we'll train you on the 35' and 50' boom lifts.
  • Must be able to work the full schedule: full-time-plus hours, including nights, weekends, early mornings, and late evenings during peak season. Opening night doesn't move.
  • Must work outdoors in all weather โ€” heat, cold, rain, and the occasional curious insect.
  • Must be willing to wear hip waders and work in pools and ponds โ€” the water reflections are part of the magic.
  • Background check and drug screening required prior to employment. High school diploma or equivalent.
What We Offer
  • Starting at $16.50/hour with full-time hours and overtime during peak season.
  • Real skills: professional lighting techniques, boom lift certification training, and event production experience.
  • 403(b) retirement plan eligibility, Keepsakes gift shop discounts, and tickets to Nights of a Thousand Candles โ€” see the magic you helped create.
  • A workplace that's a National Historic Landmark: 9,100 acres of gardens, sculpture, and Lowcountry beauty.
