Job description

Wage Information: Seasonals with a Valid Commercial Driver's License (CDL): $17.50 - $18.50/hour Seasonals without a Valid Commercial Driver's License (CDL): $16.00 - $17.00/hour Position Summary: Under the direction of the Street Maintenance Supervisor/Traffic Maintenance Supervisor, perform a variety of entry level duties in the construction, maintenance, repair, and cleaning of City streets, alleys, storm drain systems and related structures. Essential Functions: Asphalt Maintenance: Perform pothole patching in live traffic along with other asphalt repairs on City maintained streets and alleys. This may include the operation of a hand blower and an asphalt hand roller

Crack Sealing and Mastic Operations: Duties would include assisting qualified Traffic Control Technician setting up traffic control and lane closures, applying joint sealing material to the roadway and loading and unloading the supply's trucks. Traffic Painting Maintenance: Duties may include assisting qualified Traffic Control Technician setting up and taking down traffic control for long line painting, legends, crosswalks and other street painting as needed. Sign Maintenance: Assisting in the replacement, installation and maintenance of the traffic signs throughout the City.

This may include the use of hand and power tools, ladders and traffic control devices. Road/Project Construction: Duties may include asphalt placement, mixing or pouring concrete, using shovels to expose potential hazards and any other duties as needed during construction. Storm Drainage System: Duties will be to assist Full time staff in the maintenance and construction of the City drainage facilities, ditches and roadways.

Complaint Response: This would consist of service request from the public, the repair of plow damage, minor tree/brush trimming, storm damage clean-up and other duties delegated by Supervisory staff. Facility Maintenance: Assist in the daily cleanup of shop areas, restrooms, common meeting rooms and other Street Maintenance buildings. Duties include general cleaning, restocking, litter removal, and vehicle maintenance.

Other job functions may include: Repair streets and alleys - pavement maintenance, weed abatement, etc. Litter collection - Pick up trash along roads and sweep sidewalks as needed. Assist with the placement of traffic control devices.

Perform various traffic maintenance duties, such as street painting and sign installation. Be an effective team member by exhibiting self-motivation, supporting other employees in handling tasks, interacting effectively and respectfully with others, showing a desire to contribute to the team effort, accepting assignments willingly, and completing tasks within agreed upon timelines. Other duties as assigned.

Education & Experience Requirements High School diploma or equivalent and at least 18 years of age; Previous manual laborer experience preferred but not required. Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license, additional compensation for CDL drivers. Knowledge of: Knowledge of basic hand tools associated with street and traffic maintenance work.

Knowledge of traffic control devices is beneficial. Ability to: Ability to learn the use of materials, equipment, procedures and practices used in street and traffic maintenance. Ability to ensure the safety of co-workers, self, and others when working on City streets.

Ability to create and maintain a positive working environment that welcomes diversity, ensures cooperation, and promotes respect by sharing expertise with team members, fostering safe work practices, and developing trusting work relationships. Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions. Ability to work independently with little or no supervision.

Ability to shovel and sweep. Ability to climb, balance, squat, crawl, reach, kneel, stoop, lift, push, and pull while performing maintenance tasks; and to frequently reach above shoulder level to perform maintenance tasks. Ability to lift and carry equipment and materials weighing up to 60 pounds, such as tools and maintenance machinery, and to occasionally lift and carry, with assistance, materials such as paint barrels, cones, and barricades weighing up to 100 pounds with assistance.

Ability to work in dusty conditions, work outdoors in all types of weather, work evenings, weekends, and holidays. Ability to attend work as scheduled. Working Conditions: ENVIRONMENT: Outdoor environment such as seasonal heat and cold, temperature changes and extreme weather conditions, noise equipment operation and surrounding traffic.

HAZARDS: Exposure to hot asphalt, dirt & dust; working around machinery having moving parts; working around moving equipment and high speed vehicular traffic; fumes from vehicle and equipment operation, oil, paints, solvents, gases, asphalts and other potentially hazardous materials; limited exposure to working heights up to 30-feet, electrical power supplies and high voltage.
